Everything You Feel When Your Favorite Book Becomes a Movie

Dec 12 2014 - 8:00am

For the fervent reader, sometimes there's nothing worse than watching your favorite book become a major motion picture. Year after year, we see studios butcher beautiful works of literature with a horribly written screenplay, a poor casting decision, or the elimination of a major plot point. Now, don't get me wrong — there are obviously some exceptions (Harry Potter [1] made the transition without too much damage) that make us think things will be different this time. But they rarely are. From the first flicker of hope to the final moment of anger, here are all the emotions you experience when a beloved book makes a move to the big screen.

At first, you're so excited to see your favorite book come to life.

But then you think of all the other times a bestseller became a blockbuster.

And you're immediately filled with anger.

You roll your eyes as friends yammer on and on about the movie.

You argue that the book is always better.

You refuse to see it with them.

Until you see the actor who's been cast as the lead.

Then you start to have second thoughts.

Maybe this time, it really will be better.

So you give in and buy your ticket.

But not before rereading the entire book.

Your hopes remain high as you find a seat in the theater.

But then the film starts and all the anger comes back.

The actor doesn't have the right hair color.

The line isn't recited as it's written in the book.

And did they skip a major plot point?!

You sit in anger, waiting for the final scene.

The credits roll, and while everyone else cheers, you scream.

You promise yourself that you will never ever do this again.

But then again, we all break promises.
