At this point, there's a very high chance you've burned all the way through Netflix's hottest new adaptation, 13 Reasons Why [1]. If that's true, there's an even higher chance you're hungry for more. At this juncture, you have a few options. If you're still in binge-watch mode, you can totally watch the shows that are just like it [2]. And for all the readers who tore through the novel before or after watching, there are lots of similar books to read [3], too. Or, hey, here's an idea: why don't you start with the other books by Jay Asher? Only three are currently published (two, if you exclude 13 Reasons Why [4]), and there's one more on the horizon.
Thirteen Reasons Why
Of course, here's the book that started it all: Thirteen Reasons Why [5]. Chances are you wouldn't be reading this post if you hadn't already read the book or watched the Netflix show. If you've only watched the Netflix show, though, you should definitely read it. There are a ton of differences between the two [6], and reading the book could only enrich your experiences with the characters even more.
The Future of Us
The second book published by Asher was cowritten with Carolyn Mackler. The Future of Us [7] is about two teenagers living in the mid-'90s, right when the internet is first becoming a thing. Emma gets her very first computer and logs on with her best friend Josh, except when they sign on, they find themselves on Facebook, 15 years in the future. What crazy secrets might their destinies hold? They're about to figure it out.
What Light
Asher's most recently published book, What Light [8], came out this past October. It tells the story of a young woman and her family's Christmas tree farm in Oregon. Every year during the holiday season, they take their trees down to California to sell them. Sierra lives two lives in this respect: one on the farm in Oregon, and one during every holiday season in California. One year, though, she meets a boy named Caleb, and everything changes.
Piper
Another collaboration, this time with Jessica Freeburg. The two authors are reimagining the classic tale of the Pied Piper. In this iteration, a lonely deaf girl named Maggie lives in a small village in the middle of a forest. She meets and falls in love with the mysterious Piper, but soon learns he may not be everything he seems to be. Piper [9] is set for a Halloween [10] release this year. Spooky!
