Box Office: Cloverfield Breaks Records With $41 Million Opening

Box Office: Cloverfield's Monster Weekend Breaks Records

January usually isn't the month to expect big things at the box office, but Cloverfield just changed all of that. JJ Abrams' monster flick was No. 1 at the box office this weekend, earning an estimated $41 million and setting an all-time January record, Variety reports. Katherine Heigl's 27 Dresses came in a respectable No. 2 earning $22.4 million — another great opening for this time of year.

On the other hand, the ladies of Mad Money didn't fare well at all over the weekend, coming in low down the list at No. 7. The Bucket List took the third slot while audiences continued to enjoy the little comedy that could, Juno, which came in No. 4.

Despite this weekend's huge numbers, we might not be done yet: Studios could gross even more today if moviegoers head to the theaters on their day off.

Saw Cloverfield- or at least twenty minutes of it before losing my lunch to motion sickness. It's the only movie I've ever walked out of. I wound up sneaking in to Juno, which I loved.

Cloverfield was a big disappointment for me. I thought it was just a mediocre movie...definitely didn't live up to the hype at all, in my opinion.

I thought Cloverfield was the scariest movie I've ever seen. I am a bit of a wuss, but I couldn't help being terrified. Plus, the camera shaking made me a little nauseous, which added to the anxiety. But....I loved it!

Duuuude, Buzz! You said that we'd get used to the shakiness of Cloverfield, but I'm home nursing my stomach to a bowl of chicken soup for dinner since the room won't stop spinning after my movie experience this afternoon. ;) I guess some people can handle shaky cameras better than others, haha. Movie was better...and scarier...than I was expecting it to be, but do NOT recommend for people afraid of spider-y things. I think I almost broke my friend's arm I was clutching it so hard.

I enjoyed Cloverfield but it left me with a lot of questions. Where did this monster exactly come from? The camera shakiness thing was a bit much, but it was a good movie, very suspenseful and atmospheric. It kept me at the edge of my seat from beginning to end. I just wish the we could have seen more of the monster. The ending was a surprise, very Blair Witch Project-esque. ;)

I thought Cloverfield was amazing, definitely one of the best movies I've ever seen. Though the shakiness of the camera can make you dizzy, it made everything so much more realistic and I felt like I was there.

I thought Cloverfield was a waste of my money. The ending was terrible and I left the theater with my eyes hurting from having to adjust from the shaky camera. I had low expectations anyway. Only thing I thought was good was the graphics of the "monster".
