Cameron Diaz to Star in An Ex to Grind With Benicio Del Toro 2010-04-20 11:30:00

Cameron Diaz Has An Ex to Grind With Benicio Del Toro

Well, this very well might be the strangest romantic comedy couple ever: Cameron Diaz and Benicio Del Toro have signed on for An Ex to Grind, a film adaptation of the novel by Jane Heller. The story follows a big-shot athlete (Del Toro) who supports his wife (Diaz) until, years later, an injury reduces him to a stay-at-home slob while she shoots up to business success. She wants to ditch him but doesn't want to pay alimony, so she hatches a plan to find him a new wife — which backfires when the other woman gets him to pull his act together.

I actually think this premise sounds cute, but Del Toro? In a rom-com? With Cameron Diaz, no less? I'm sure the guy can be funny, but I can't quite picture him doing the sort of cheeseball humor often required of the genre. One explanation of his surprising choice: he supposedly wanted to do another film with producer Laura Bickford, who also worked with him on Traffic and Che — but needless to say, this is quite a jump from those films. So, what do you make of this career move? Can you see these two as a couple?

depends; I truly believe that a genuinely talented dramatic actor can pull off any well-written content, including light fare and comedy - and many have done so successfully (look at Morgan Freeman, Mark Walbergh, Anthony Hopkins, Kate Winslet; the list goes on). however, if this is a cheeseball, Cameron Diaz rom com; Del Toro's talent will be wasted and his charater will be monumentally corny (which I am more likely to anticipate considering how stupid the premise sounds). could be a sweet, darkly funny, decent movie; we'll see though...

He did play someone who needed to get his life together pretty well in Things we Lost in the Fire, so he's probably good for the first part of the movie. Not sure about the second part though.

I have the hots for Benicio Del Toro, so seeing him in a movie where I can semi-relate to his romantic interest is fine by me!
