Hulu is no stranger to adapting literature — The Handmaid's Tale [1]'s grisly dystopian story has become a widely acclaimed show since it debuted in 2017. Now, the streaming service will take on another timeless work that's become embedded in high school curricula [2] and the American lexicon: Joseph Heller's Catch-22 [3]. The novel is about a US Air Force captain named John Yossarian who's stationed in Italy during World War II. The title of the book refers to a military rule in the story in which if a person is insane, they do not have to fly missions — but they have to apply to get excused, and applying means that you're not insane and still able to fly a plane. Try wrapping that around your head!

The beloved classic has caught the attention of major names in the entertainment industry, much like how TV dramas Sharp Objects [4] and Big Little Lies [5] have recently poached prestige actors [6]. Starting May 17, you'll be able to tune in and watch your favorite actors such as Christopher Abbott, Hugh Laurie, George Clooney [7], Kyle Chandler, and more. Christopher Abbott as Yossarian

The actor plays Yossarian, the young protagonist who is a lead bombardier but hates war. Abbott has appeared in a number of works, including It Comes at Night, Vox Lux, and Girls.

Kyle Chandler as Colonel Cathcart

Kyle Chandler plays Colonel Cathcart, an insecure yet ambitious group commander in charge of Yossarian's squadron. Chandler is known for his leading role on Friday Night Lights [8], but he's also recently appeared in films such as Game Night and Manchester by the Sea.

George Clooney as Lieutenant Scheisskopf

George Clooney [9] plays Scheisskopf — which is literally German for sh*thead. Husband to Amal [10], father of two, former sexiest man alive [11], Dr. Ross on ER, and recipient of multiple Oscars and Golden Globes, he's definitely one of the headliners on this project.

Hugh Laurie as Major de Coverley

The actor portrays Major de Coverley, the squadron's intense officer. Many know him as the title character from Fox's hit series, House, but he's also recently starred on the critically acclaimed shows The Night Manager and Chance.

Martin Delaney as Sergeant Towser

The British actor plays Sergeant Towser, Major Major's assistant. He has played a small part in Zero Dark Thirty as the assistant to National Security Advisor.

Giancarlo Giannini as Marcello

The Italian star is set to play Marcello, the owner of a brothel in Rome. The internationally renowned actor is known for his award-wining roles in Seven Beauties and Love and Anarchy.

Rafi Gavron as Aarfy

Known for playing Lady Gaga [12]'s manager in A Star Ss Born [13], the actor will bring to life Aarfy, a navigator in Yossarian's B-25 bomber. Gavron has also appeared in Celeste and Jesse Forever and Life Unexpected.

Daniel David Stewart as Milo

The Spring Awakening theater actor plays Milo, an ambitious officer who wants to expand mess operations and trading goods for profit.

Graham Patrick Martin as Orr

The actor will appear as Orr, Yossarian's good friend and roommate who is constantly shot down, yet manages to survive anyway. He recently played a minor role on The Good Doctor [14] and starred as Rusty Beck on TNT's Major Crimes.

Kevin J. O'Connor as Lt. Colonel Korn

O'Connor plays Lt. Colonel Korn, Cathcart's much more charismatic, intelligent, and sadistic sidekick. He has a recurring role on Chicago P.D. as Commander Fischer and has appeared on major features such as The Mummy, Van Helsing, and There Will Be Blood.

Jay Paulson as Chaplain Tappman

The actor will bring to life Chaplain Tappman, a kind minister who Yossarian trusts the most. He recently played an LAPD detective across Chris Pine [15] in the limited series I Am the Night [16].

Tessa Ferrer

Ferrer will star as Nurse Duckett, Yossarian's lover. You might recognize this actress from her role as Dr. Leah Murphy on Grey's Anatomy [17] as well as her recent supporting role in Insidious: The Last Key.

Jon Rudnitsky as McWatt

The former SNL cast member is set to star as McWatt, Yossarian's pilot and close friend. Beside his work on SNL, you may have seen Rudnitsky in the rom-coms Set It Up and Home Again.
