"Desperate Housewives" Rundown Episode 2: "Smiles of a Summer Night"

"Desperate Housewives" Rundown Episode 2: "Smiles of a Summer Night"

This week's episode of "Desperate Housewives" started out with talk about how fake peoples' smiles are in the suburbs. Well, the first season of this show taught us that! Indeed, with a few exceptions, I thought this week's episode was nearly back to first season "DH" quality. And did anyone notice that Eva Longoria's name in the credits is now Eva Longoria Parker? Just an interesting tidbit.

You can catch the entire episode on ABC's website, or if you watched last night, let's discuss when you

Susan — The part where Susan goes to a high school party to retrieve her daughter dressed in little more than lingerie was ridiculous, but otherwise Susan's hysterics are slightly toned down this week. More obnoxious is Mike's snide little comment about Susan's breakfast when she pours on the syrup saying she's eating for two, and Mike replies, "And do you both want to be fat?" Nice. I have to say I liked it when Mike and Julie teamed up a little there at the end after some confusion over who makes the decisions when it comes to Julie's life.

Bree — This plotline involving Bree feverishly trying to find out Katherine's secret lemon meringue pie recipe was classic Bree, and I loved every minute of it. I also thought Orson was actually kind of funny this week! Like when he calls Katherine's pie switch-up "culinary terrorism."

Gaby — I must say, I'm enjoying Gaby and Carlos sneaking around together. I laughed out loud when Carlos dove to the ground and slither-crawled away from being seen by an approaching Edie. Later, Gaby has an unusually serious and emotional scene when she tells Lynette about her father's death from cancer. Gaby doesn't often have these sad, weighty moments, so it was interesting to see a different side of her.

Lynette — This is the one storyline I thought was super lame. Since when does Lynette push people like she does with Gaby, insisting that she come to chemo with her? Anyone could see that Gaby has a hard time with hospitals and it's probably for a terribly sad reason. Lynette forcing Gaby to join her in chemo seems out of character.

Edie — Firstly, I love how Edie was a part of the gang last season while Marcia Cross was off the show having babies, but now the other ladies have no real use for her. Up to her same old tricks, Edie is trying to manipulate Carlos into spending some of the money she knows he has, and in the end she blackmails Carlos into getting engaged, saying that if they're married, she won't testify against him if the IRS investigates his offshore account. And, of course, if he doesn't agree to marry her, chances are Edie will ensure that the IRS comes a-knocking.

Katherine — She's a snake. Swapping out Bree's pie for hers at Lynette's lunch was, in the world of Wisteria Lane, downright cruel. And it becomes clearer that Katherine's been lying to her daughter Dylan about her real father — and her childhood in general, it seems.

I know I'm a little behind on commenting on this episode, but I just watched it last night and I wanted to defend Lynette a bit. My mom is currently going through chemo for breast cancer and I can say with 100% certainty that how Lynette acted was right on point. My mom HATES when people treat her like a sick person. She is adamant about keeping up her "old" life so that she doesn't fall into self-pity, which can be huge for someone facing something like cancer. She feels very strongly about people not sitting around being sad for her (ala Lynette with Tom) and Lynette clearly said she wanted Gabby there the most because Gabby was the most fun and the most likely to keep her mind off of everything. So I completely give Lynette a pass for being a bit pushy. I also thought the scene with Felicity Huffman and Eva Longoria about Gaby's father dying was one of the best acted scenes on this show in a long time.

I agree with the others saying Katherine will discover Bree's fake pregnancy, but Bree knows too much about her as well. This Katherine and Bree thing is so great and I can't wait to see how it goes down. Carlos and Gaby are great together and I can't wait to see how they keep this up. One thought- Gaby is ALWAYS at her home on Wisteria Lane. Shouldn't she be living with her husband, the mayor. For a mayor's wife in a small town, she sure gets away with a lot of sneaking around. Her new hubby is totally creepy and I can only imagine what he'll do to Carlos when he finds out. And what about the 'hit' Carlos put on Edie (or at least that is what it looked like)? This is getting good.

cymone -- I think it's supposed to look unrealistic because the audience knows she's faking it. It kind of foreshadows the fact the people are going to find out.

I loved how Eva was more emotional in that episode. I also loved how her makeup was so much more natural, she looks more beautiful without a lot of makeup caked on! The whole time I kept trying to figure out why she looked so pretty & it's because she had minimal eye makeup on.

I'm probably in the minority of loving Edie. All of this stuff that's going on with her is probably leading to something big. I still think that Nicolette should be added to the picture of the main 4 in the opening. Katherine with the lock on the little recipe box was classic as was Bree with the bolt cutters! I wonder if she had a replacement lock as well? I think the whole Dylan thing is somehow leading to her absent father abusing her in that downstairs room and maybe Katherine had some kind of hypnosis put on Dylan. That would be why she didn't remember Julie or anything. I wish they'd do less anything of Susan. She's annoying. Since Episode 1 Season 1.

I just LOVE Bree! I about died when she got the bolt cuters! I really hate Edie this season.

Ian could totally be the father of the baby - it wouldn't be happening to Susan if there wasn't some potential irritating twist to make her even more awkward and obnoxious. I hope it isn't the case because I feel like the reason Susan is so over the top annoying is because every B story line that comes up gets thrown to her. If she is a main character on the show...make her a little likeable!

Bree was hysterical last night. I really really really cannot stand Gabby. I've had enough of her.

lol, i was dying when bree came back from susan's with mike's tools! i agree that katherine might be the one to figure out bree's fake pregnancy but bree's got something on katherine as well...ah..can't wait how that unfolds... on the other hand, there's something wrong with the writers this season...first the comment about the Philippines last episode and this episode it's the fat comment. i thought that "fat" comment was a little insensitive and a little unnecessary.

I love classic Bree! I cannot wait to see how the story unfolds between Katherine and Bree. I agree with Fleurfairy about Susan not Lynette getting Cancer, but I am also hoping that the hitman kills Susan instead of Edie! I have a feeling that I won't be that lucky because of Susan being pregnant and the story line potential when DUMB Susan realizes that Mike might not be the father and she has to be extremely awkward AND pregnant. Bummer.

I absolutely LOVE Bree. She made me crack up last night. I really am not a fan of Katherine at all and I can't wait until she is exposed. All in all it was a great episode. I loved the preview for next week where Gabby explained how she was cleaning up the drink she spilled on Katherine's husband, and Katherine was like "by breast feeding him".

Love the Carlos and Gaby storyline. These two are great together. Loved the hit man scene at the end. I find myself hoping that Edie is killed off the show! She's just not funny lately. Katherine is irritating. I wanted Bree to slap her hard across the face. I also found it odd that Lynette would insist Gaby be at the hospital with her. It seemed very out of character. She's never that demanding and needy with her friends. Susan continues to annoy me with her clumsiness, dumb comments, and fluffy storylines. Why doesn't Susan get cancer? Probably because Teri Hatcher would refuse to look like a cancer patient. You know she LOVES the boobs pushed up and out in every scene.

I noticed the Eva Longoria Parker thing too.

Oh there is going to be a HUGE cat fight between Bree and Katherine! I have a feeling Katherine might be the one to discover that Bree is not really pregant. I just have a strange feeling. But the tension between the two last night was so thick you could cut it with a knife!!

Buzz, I agree about the quality of the show being almost equal to that of Season 1. The addition of Katherine and Dylan to the story line is promising; if anyone can outdo Bree, it's Katherine! Lynette is self-absorbed right now; she seems to be struggling with how to express her needs to others as well as to herself. This is new territory for her and I find myself sympathizing with her as she struggles. Mike's "fat" comment made me angry as well and I'm anxious to see what Edie's fate will be now that Carlos has exchanged money with what appears to be a favorite hit man. All in all, I think DH is close to being back and on top again.
