Do You Care If Your Partner Shares Your Entertainment Tastes?

A couple of days ago, Netflix twittered about a dating site that supposedly uses people's movie rental information to make love connections. I gotta say that site looks a little sketchy to me — but it still got me thinking about how important our entertainment tastes are when choosing a partner. Since we're all about one of the ultimate expressions of love right now on the Sugar network, I thought I'd ask: Is it important to you that your significant other shares your tastes in entertainment?

Mu husband and i have some of the same tastes, but not all. He listens to the Grateful Dead with me so i have to listen to Frank Zappa with him. No big deal, you may learn something new. Sometimes it is annoying to watch what he wants, and i'm sure he feels the same way about me, but in general we can agree. Although i do forbid him to watch Family Guy around me, that is the worst show in the history of television! (I think he just watches it because it annoys me so much, lol)

I like girl-kicks-a*s movies; he'll watch anything with zombies. I like indie rock and delta blues; he's a hard-core punk guitarist. We compromise. Whoever does the driving picks the music, and if he watches "Pride and Prejudice" with me, I know that later I'll be sitting down to the Italian version of "Zombi 2". Still, we've been happy together for five years, and we're engaged to be married. So it works.

whiplash, if only you were a guy! haha, I only say that because I too am a total snob when it comes to entertainment tastes - I can't stand people who like stupid movies or television or listen to crappy music. I know that I'm a total elitist, and it's something that I am constatly working on, but I also don't think I could deal with having a boyfriend or husband who likes something stupid like Fast & Furious or who would not understand the genius of Casablanca. it's really hypocritical of me; I am the most inflexible person and yet I would need someone who is very flexible (but still not a pushover). hopefully, someday, God will answer my prayers...

It's not a deal breaker for me. If he likes what I like (and visa versa), then good. Hopefully he'll at least make an effort to watch some of my shows...

def a deal breaker. how can i find common interests with him if we like different stuff? my TV choices reflect my personality...

My husband and I like the same movies and TV (for the most part) but not really music. Some things we like but other things we don't. Thankfully we're not too into music anymore.

I care if he has interesting tastes. Like Whiplash said, no White Chicks or Nickelback! But I have to say that I'm a little more particular about the music that he likes. I love music so much, that it would be hard to date someone who liked genres I really don't care about, like rap or hip hop...

Eh, it's nice when we do agree on a TV show or movie, but it doesn't matter very much. In general, we have very different taste in films, but we like a lot of the same TV shows, like The Office, HIMYM, Big Bang Theory. And on the nights that I need to watch Lost or he needs to watch Rescue Me, that's when separate TV sets come in quite handy!!

Yes, I prefer my SO has the same tastes. I don't mind attenbding something alone if I want to see it. But its so much nicer if your SO likes the same music, movies, or comedians. If they are willing to take in a museum, gallery or festival. :)

I don't really care in the end, as long as he doesn't try to force something I don't like on me. My ex was horrible with that: "Oh really? You don't like U2? Why is that? Let's listen to some of their albums. Here, I burned you a copy of Joshua Tree. I'll break out their songbook and play you some of my favorites!" GAH! I wanted to wring his neck sometimes lol.

i used to be that girl who would judge someone by what their tastes were - so i was extremely difficult when it came to dating. you didn't like my music, i won't date you. this changed when i met my current bf - we do have different tastes and sometimes it's annoying, but overall i don't mind so much anymore.

We generally have the same taste in movies but are different when it comes to TV. He likes stuff like nitro circus and fantasy factory which are shows I would never watch on my own.

As long as we can watch stuff together or listen to something... we don't need to be exactly the same with tastes... that gets boring. But my bf and I are in the entertainment business, so we take entertainment seriously haha

It's not a dealbreaker if we don't like the same things. But it WOULD be a dealbreaker if he liked stupid crap. I'm an admitted pop-culture snob and if I met a guy whose favorite band was Nickelback and whose favorite movie was White Chicks, well, then I'd have serious reservations about his taste.

I hope its not a deal breaker because I married a man who hates what I love! I will watch everything and so we can go see something with action and suspense but when I want to see a love story or a drama he hates it and refuses to go. A good comedy we both like but I seem to want to see more then he does.

Overall, our tastes are similar but there are differences. It can be great when you are introduced to something you would never had tried before (movie or a new band) but gives me pleasure to mock something they like and I don't ... like Degrassi! LOL

I love music so I definitely want my guy on the same page about what we listen to in the car or what concerts to go to together. Otherwise, it's nice to introduce someone to something new.

it's nice to have that but it's not a requirement. my fiance likes a lot of shows that i don't care for but he's great and always watches what i want. he's more of a nature/animal/history person and that's just not always my thing.

My BF and I like some of the same things, but definitely not all of them. It honestly doesn't matter to me - sometimes he can even introduce me to new things I might not otherwise have tried.
