Do You Have to Watch a Series From the Beginning?

The news that the CW will repeat all of Gossip Girl from the beginning has me wondering: Will you pick up a series in the middle, even if you haven't seen the early episodes? I'm typically a purist — I'm watching The Wire and Dexter from the beginning on DVD — but I've also started shows like House partway through, even though it's not my preference. What about you?

Due to my work schedule I don't tend to start watching a show from the beginning, but if I catch a couple episodes and really like it I'll make a point to watch it and rent the DVDs to catch up. Like with Battlestar Galactica. I finally started watching in season three, and then got around to watching the first two seasons on DVD. It's kind of interesting already knowing what's going to happen, and then finding out just how it all came about, lol.

I generally prefer to start a series from the beginning (a great benefit of TV on DVD!). However, I am more strict with serialized shows than procedural.

i'll watch anytime, but i'll watch the previous episodes when they get repeated...

I will always get into a show and then rent the past seasons on DVD.

For the most part I have to start from the beginning, especially if the series builds on earlier episodes (like Heroes). But there's always the exception (like Friends or your basic comedy).

I definitely have to start watching from the beginning. In rare occasions there may be an exception but for the most part I always watch it from the beginning. For example, I refused to watch the office on TV until I was all caught up.

I like to watch shows from the beginning so i know what is going on. But if is a show that has a different plot each week and you don't have to have seen the last episode (like L&O SVU) then i can start watching anytime. I just started watching House last season and hope to catch up on the first few seasons on Netflix.

Yup, have to. That's how I never got into Lost or Grey's Anatomy, I missed the first episodes and then lost interest, kind glad I did on those two really though.

I think it depends on what the show is. Sometimes you need to start at the beginning to know what's going on. some shows you can easily pick up what's happening without needing to start at the beginning.

I couln't care less if i watched maybe ten episodes then never saw the show again

it's so easy to go online and catch the premieres of new shows to decide if you want to watch them or not. that's how i found pushing daisies... and how i met your mother... and it really comes in handy even though i have dvr, especially if i forget to record an episode

I can NOT, or maybe just absolutely refuse to watch a series after it has started. Everyone RAVES about Grey's Anatomy but I wont watch it because I know I've already missed so much. So I just hold out buy the dvd sets from the beginning and ignore any episodes airing on TV. It's such a shame.......

You have to watch Lost from beginning otherwise you would not get the full effect of the show.

My brother and sister loved LOST. So I decided to rent it slowly over time and now I LOVE it too!

The only tv show I have ever been able to jump into the mix without seeing all of the first episodes is Weeds. I had my boyfriend update me with the plot from the first two seasons. Otherwise I have to start from the beginning! And I will never watch a sequel or trilogy if I haven't seen the first one! I have yet to see any of the Shrek's or Bourne movies because I can't get anyone to watch the originals with me!

Usually I can't jump into an already started show, but Gossip Girl is one that was fun to watch. I've only seen the 3 that are posted online, but that was all I needed. But, definitely, movies with sequels I will only watch if I've seen the first one. That's why I had such a hard time watching the Star Wars movies!

if you don't watch all the episodes than you are missing important events during the show. like with one tree hill, you just cant jump in now and start watching, cause you have missed lots of the characters past.

I'm very good at picking up shows midway through the season. If I get the chance, I'll watch the episodes I missed but normally I don't mind not seeing them. Maybe I'll just watch a scene that I missed that I read about or something. I think that most of the shows that I watch, I began watching mid season (BSG is probably the only one I've ever watched straight through).

That's part of the reason that I love TIVO so much. You can record the current season as you get caught up on old seasons. It also helps that a lot of shows are online now, giving people a chance to catch up if they might otherwise just bypass a new show that they've been missing.

It's really hard for me to even try a show if it already started, but it does depend on the show. Some shows are serialized so you have to watch all of them, but if I for some reason try the show and like the first episode, I'll keep watching, and try to go back.

generally, yes. I have missed shows this season so instead of watching them now i am waiting for the season to be on DVD. one exception is grey's anatomy. i'll watch older episodes later - i just don't have time to go back for every show. i've missed 11 episodes of grey's but it doesn't seem to matter THAT much. the episodes last week was an older one from this season, luckily. heroes - i have missed all of this season so need to watch them online first.

I always start at the beginning- in fact, there are shows like Desperate Housewives that I want to watch but don't because I haven't been able to start from the beginning. My one exception has been House...I picked an episode here or there last season and have been watching it regularly this season- but I'm in the middle of Netflixing the first season to catch up :)

Most ongoing shows I have to watch from the beginning. Like Dexter - I have the first episode downloaded, but haven't watched it yet because I don't have any of the others. When I picked up Grey's Anatomy, I had to download all the episodes before I could start watching the current ones on TV. I'm weird. :)

if i don't know what's going on with the series from the beginning, then i usually don't watch it. unless it's one of those shows that keeps a plot in each episode unique to that one.
