Do You Listen to DVD Commentaries?

Some DVD commentaries offer a truly fascinating peek into the inner workings of film production while others strike me as a waste of time. What do you think?

Commentaries are like christmas presents --- sometimes the ones that aren't wrapped up the nicest - turn out to be the best ones. Or then there are the ones where the actors/directors/P.A./Caterer can't remember anything about the movie - oh well there's always another Christmas

If anyone out there likes She's The Man (I'll stick my neck out there and say I love it, ha) that commentary is hilarious.

Oh, and I loved the commentaries for the tv show, Alias. Oh my goodness, so incredibly funny. I've listened to them over and over. It's so great how they all got along and how close some of them were.

I love dvd commentaries. It's my favorite extra. You learn a lot about the movie and people/sets/locations, etc. in the movie. One of my favorites is Shallow Hal (learned a lot about the extras, music and character names) and worse is Resident Evil (a bunch of babble about nothing).

Absolutely! With everything too, I'm not very selective when it comes to listening to commentaries.

Depends on the movie/show and who is doing the commentary.

I have before, but it usually depends how into the movie I am.

I used to only listen to the ones of my absolute favorite movies, but as an aspiring screenwriter it is one of the things that can help me and give me insight. So I have a huge bag of DVDs w/commentaries just waiting to be delved into!

I'll watch for the movies that I really like and often for movies that I just didn't quite "get," hoping to hear some insight from the actors and directors that will give me direction. Typically, I'll listen for documentaries as well since they're often as good as the movies themselves.

pinkflats - yes, gag reels are much more entertaining though than commentaries. I wish more DVDs came with gag reels.

I did the commentaries for Lord of the Rings and they were hilarious!

I like listening to commentaries with the right people commenting on it, but I don't watch the whole thing usually on scenes that I liked. I actually watch more of the gag reels than I do for the commentaries.

One of the best commentaries i have ever heard was on "dawn of the dead" George Romero and his wife throughout the whole thing, just work off eachothers memories. At one point He says something like "i dont remember that guys name" and she will tell you his name, that he is georges 3rd cousin, where he is now....the things that woman remembers are hilarious. My favorite part is Tom Savini, who did the makeup, talking about all the mistakes you can see in the final film. My other favorite Commentaries are Riding in cars with boys (drew barrymore) and Resident Evil (milla jovovich and michelle rodriguez) Hilarious

Yup, always. Every time I get a film I'll watch it twice first normally and then with the commentary. I love hearing the thinking behind each scene.

For me, it completely depends who is giving the commentary. Sometimes the actors, producers, or directors are incredibly bland and don't offer much. I am so glad that Oliver Stone did commentary on the JFK DVD because it helped me so much when I was going my senior thesis on the film.

Only with the ones I'm totally fascinated with.

Sometimes. The commentary for the Lord of the Rings Trilogy is hilarious. Of course you can only watch a bit at a time since the film is so long. I check out the commentaries when I am curious about the actors thoughts on a particular scene or if I am really in love with the director.

It depends on the movies and/or shows and who is doing the commentary. I like listening to the commentaries on "Lost" and "The Office" and "The Goonies" has the best commentary EVERY. I never listened to the commentary on "Sideways" and that's one of my all-time favorite movies. Thanks for the tip, mwmsjuly19. :)

Love them. I love to see how movies are made and the thought process that gets the team there. Sometimes they are better than watching the movies without the comments. (I love the "Sex & The City" and "Lost" commentaries and the ones for "Sideways" were hilarious!)
