- The scoop: Lee (Mara) bites off more than she can chew as a corporate consultant sent to figure out what to do with the dangerous subject of an experiment. If you liked Taylor-Joy in The Witch [9], you should plan on seeing her as the aforementioned experiment.

The Light Between Oceans
- Starring: Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander
- The scoop: One of several movies adapted from books [11] hitting the big screen this year, The Light Between Oceans follows a lighthouse keeper and his wife after they rescue a baby. The film, set in post-WWI Australia, was selected to premiere at the Venice Film Festival.

The 9th Life of Louis Drax
- Starring: Jamie Dornan, Sarah Gadon, and Aaron Paul
- The scoop: Fifty Shades of Grey's Dornan takes on the role of a psychologist whose sense of reality starts to crumble in this thriller. Expect to be slightly spooked; it's directed by Alexandre Aja, the man behind 2006's The Hills Have Eyes.

Before I Wake
- Starring: Kate Bosworth [14], Thomas Jane, and Jacob Tremblay
- The scoop: Tremblay, who took award season by storm after starring in The Room, plays a young boy whose dreams become reality when he sleeps. It's wonderful — until he starts having nightmares that almost kill his adoptive parents (Bosworth and Jane).

Sully
- Starring: Tom Hanks [16], Laura Linney [17], and Aaron Eckhart [18]
- The scoop: The story of the now-famous airline pilot Chesley Sullenberger, who landed his damaged plane into the Hudson River in 2009. Unless it's an unexpected dud, you can count on Hanks making the rounds during award season for this.

The Disappointments Room
- Starring: Kate Beckinsale [20] and Lucas Till
- The scoop: Dana (Beckinsale) and her family movie to the country for a new start, only to find that their dream home is super, super haunted. Hopefully The Disappointments Room will add something new to the haunted old house genre; if not, it still looks full of fun jump scares.

Other People
- Starring: Jesse Plemons, Bradley Whitford, and Molly Shannon
- The scoop: Audiences and critics at the Sundance Film Festival loved this indie about a failing comedy writer (Plemons) who comes home to care for his mother when she gets a rare cancer. While it bills itself as a drama, it'll make you laugh until your sides hurt — a strange and wonderful feat for a movie about cancer.

Blair Witch
- Starring: James Allen McCune and Corbin Reid
- The scoop: Originally billed as The Woods, filmmakers have since revealed that, yes, this is in fact a sequel to 1999's The Blair Witch Project. This time around, James (McCune) heads into the forest to find out once and for all what happened to his sister, the documentarian from the first movie. (You might remember her as the one who is definitely not lost.)

Snowden
- Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley
- The scoop: Oliver Stone's Edward Snowden biopic is finally hitting theaters after not one, but two release date swaps (it was first scheduled for December 2015). Gordon-Levitt is starring as the NSA whistleblower opposite Shailene Woodley as his girlfriend. The whole cast is packed with star-power: Nicholas Cage, Melissa Leo, Scott Eastwood, Zachary Quinto [25], and Timothy Olyphant are all among the marquee names.

Bridget Jones's Baby
- Starring: Renée Zellweger [27], Patrick Dempsey [28], and Colin Firth [29]
- The scoop: Bridget (Zellweger) is caught in a love triangle when she finds herself pregnant — and there are two possible fathers. If you like the Bridget Jones movies, it really doesn't matter how silly the premise is, you're still totally going to see this movie.

The Magnificent Seven
- Starring: Denzel Washington [31], Chris Pratt, and Ethan Hawke [32]
- The scoop: Even if you're not usually "into" Westerns, the lure of Chris Pratt might be strong enough to catch your attention here. He plays one of several gunslingers who join forces to help a town under attack.

Storks
- Starring: Jennifer Aniston [34] and Andy Samberg [35]
- The scoop: This movie is for anyone whose child has asked where babies come from. In the animated film, we find out that storks used to deliver babies, but have moved on to sending packages instead. Everything is working out nicely . . . until a rogue baby appears!

Queen of Katwe
- Starring: Lupita Nyong'o and David Oyelowo
- The scoop: You may not have heard of her, but Phiona Mutesi (played by Madina Nalwanga) is basically Uganda's Bobby Fischer. She's a chess prodigy, and since Disney is bringing the tale of her life to the big screen, there will likely be plenty of heartwarming, tear-inducing moments.

The Dressmaker
- Starring: Kate Winslet [38] and Liam Hemsworth
- The scoop: If you've read Rosalie Ham's bestselling novel about a dressmaker who returns to her rural roots, you're no doubt curious about this film adaptation. Winslet is starring as the seamstress, and we have our fingers crossed for some steamy moments between her and leading man Hemsworth.

Goat
- Starring: Nick Jonas [40] and Ben Schnetzer
- The scoop: If you've heard anything about this Sundance breakout, it's probably that it has some seriously disturbing hazing scenes [41]. Nick Jonas shows a completely different side as a college student who has to watch his little brother go through the trials of pledging a fraternity. The worst part? He's the one doing the hazing.

Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children
- Starring: Eva Green, Asa Butterfield, and Samuel L. Jackson [44]
- The scoop: Ransom Riggs's whimsical novel comes together with Tim Burton's style in this fantastical adaptation. Butterfield plays Jacob, a teen who discovers a portal to the past and befriends a home full of bizarre children. Though at first he's stunned into disbelief, he soon realizes they may be the key to a long-hidden truth about his family. Intrigued? Thought so.

Masterminds
- Starring: Kristen Wiig, Zach Galifianakis [46], and Jason Sudeikis
- The scoop: And now for a movie with everyone you love in it. Ghostbusters costars Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones all appear in this screwball comedy about a bank robbery. Lest you think it sounds a little too wacky, it's based on a true story!

Deepwater Horizon
- Starring: Mark Wahlberg [49], Dylan O'Brien, and Kate Hudson [50]
- The scoop: Another film based on a true story, Deepwater Horizon focuses on the men who were working on the titular oil rig when it exploded in 2010. The accident was one of the worst disasters in US history, and since it's written by Friday Night Lights scribe Peter Berg, we're already stocking up on tissues.

American Honey
- Starring: Shia LaBeouf [52], Riley Keough, and Sasha Lane
- The scoop: Known in some circles as "The Movie With Shia LaBeouf's Rat-Tail," American Honey looks packed full of tour-de-force performances and memorable music. Newcomer Lane is playing Star, a girl who joins up with a band of travelers who want to explore the nation. It won the jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for the Palme d'Or, meaning this is definitely one to seek out.

The Girl on the Train
- Starring: Emily Blunt [54], Justin Theroux, and Luke Evans
- The scoop: Haven't read the excellent bestseller by Paula Hawkins yet? If you don't want to ruin the movie for yourself, you might actually want to consider holding off. Tate Taylor (The Help) is directing this adaptation of the thriller, which is busting with talent. In addition to the headliners, Edgar Ramírez, Rebecca Ferguson, Laura Prepon, Allison Janney, and Lisa Kudrow are all starring. The murder mystery is positively poised to be this year's Gone Girl!

The Birth of a Nation
- Starring: Nate Parker, Armie Hammer, and Aja Naomi King
- The scoop: Based on the true story of Nat Turner's slave rebellion, the bloody and poignant The Birth of a Nation left audiences stunned when it premiered at Sundance. It won both the audience award and the grand jury prize, which is a good omen for its fate during award season.

Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life
- Starring: Lauren Graham, Adam Pally, and Griffin Gluck
- The scoop: Chris Tebbetts and James Patterson's popular YA novel is getting the movie treatment! Gluck (Red Band Society) stars as Rafe Khatchadorian, who vows to break every rule in school. You might want to check this one out even if you don't have kids!

The Accountant
- Starring: Ben Affleck [58] and Anna Kendrick [59]
- The scoop: Despite its snooze-worthy title, The Accountant looks pretty exciting. Affleck is shedding his Batsuit to play a genius with obsessive-compulsive tendencies who "uncooks" the books for criminals. The trailer is intense, to say the least.

Desierto
- Starring: Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Gael García Bernal [61]
- The scoop: If you need to see Morgan in a role other than The Walking Dead [62]'s bat-toting Negan this year, check him out in this drama. It tells the story of a group of Mexican immigrants who encounter a man (Morgan) who prevents illegal border crossings by, well, shooting people. I take it back; Negan might be a better person.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back

- The scoop: Smulders is joining Cruise for the follow-up to 2012's Lee Child adaptation. Prepare for more car crashes, broken noses, and mystery. (Seriously, if you missed the first one, it's actually pretty great.)

- The scoop: A decade after The Da Vinci Code hit theaters (and seven years after Angels & Demons), Hanks is back as Robert Langdon for the third film in Dan Brown's series. This time, he and a beautiful doctor (Jones) must work together to stop a catastrophic attack on the world.

- Starring: Ewan McGregor [77], Dakota Fanning [78], and Jennifer Connelly [79]
- The scoop: McGregor is directing this drama about a family torn apart when the politically extreme daughter (Fanning) is accused of bombing a post office in protest of the Vietnam War. The trailer is heavy, and not just because of the use of a "Mad World" cover.

Hacksaw Ridge
- Starring: Andrew Garfield, Teresa Palmer, and Vince Vaughn [81]
- The scoop: Garfield is taking on the role of real-life army medic Desmond T. Doss, who saved countless lives during WWII despite being morally opposed to violence. You can expect this one to be bloody and emotionally stirring.

Doctor Strange
- Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams [83], and Tilda Swinton
- The scoop: Captain America and Thor are great, but it's about time we got some fresh blood into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Cumberbatch is starring as Doctor Strange, an actual doctor who develops powers while fighting cancer. He'll be battling it out with two supervillains, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor and Mads Mikkelsen.

- The scoop: Families say the darnedest things, right? Almost Christmas looks like equal parts comedy and drama, as it follows a family that comes together for their first Thanksgiving after the death of their mother.

- The scoop: When aliens come to Earth, who should be our first line of defense? A linguist, right? Adams plays Dr. Louise Banks, tasked with communicating with aliens when they come to earth. It makes a lot more sense in the trailer, I promise, and it's also playing at the Toronto International Film Festival.

- The scoop: Never forget that Oscar nominee Watts is a legit scream queen. The original star of The Ring is costarring with pint-size powerhouse Tremblay for Shut In, a psychological thriller about a woman and her son.

Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk
- Starring: Kristen Stewart [98], Vin Diesel, and Steve Martin [99]
- The scoop: Director Ang Lee is behind this adaptation of Ben Fountain's novel. Billy Lynn (Joe Alwyn) returns home to America after a tour in Iraq, but the perception of his time there is much different than the reality. You'll need some tissues just to watch this trailer.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
- Starring: Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, and Ezra Miller
- The scoop: Return to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter [101] with this new story from J.K. Rowling. Redmayne plays Newt Scamander, a writer who explores New York City — including all of its magical corners — in the '20s. Directed by David Yates (who did four Harry Potter films), it's safe to say we're in good hands.

Manchester by the Sea
- Starring: Casey Affleck [103], Michelle Williams [104], and Kyle Chandler
- The scoop: Audiences at Sundance loved this indie about a man (Affleck) who takes in his nephews after the death of his brother (Chandler). You can count on powerful performances; this may be a contender during this year's award race.

Nocturnal Animals
- Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal [106], Amy Adams [107], Isla Fisher [108], and Armie Hammer
- The scoop: Based on Austin Wright's novel Tony and Susan, this drama follows a woman (Adams) who becomes obsessed with the threatening symbolism of her ex-husband's (Gyllenhaal) manuscript. Given that Fisher and Hammer are basically playing fictional doppelgängers to Adams and Gyllenhaal, I'm all in on this already.

The Edge of Seventeen
- Starring: Hailee Steinfeld and Woody Harrelson
- The scoop: If you've seen the trailer, you know this looks like a high school movie for adults. Nadine (Steinfeld) has typical teen angst, but the story seems like it goes much deeper than the surface level "boys suck" tropes. Honestly, any movie where Woody Harrelson is the Cool Teacher sounds pretty great.

Bad Santa 2

- The scoop: Reunite with Willie (aka Bad Santa) in this sequel to the crude 2003 comedy. Brett Kelly and Tony Cox are back as Thurman Merman and Marcus, and this time around, Bates is joining the party as Willie's mom.

- Starring: Dwayne Johnson and Auli'i Cravalho
- The scoop: Disney heads to the islands of the South Pacific for this mystical tale. Johnson is playing a demigod to newcomer Cravalho's wise-beyond-her-years teen. With original songs cowritten by Hamilton's Lin Manuel-Miranda, you can't go wrong.

- Starring: Alden Ehrenreich, Lily Collins, and Alec Baldwin [113]
- The scoop: Director Warren Beatty seemingly recruited all his friends for this movie. Aside from the above, Matthew Broderick [114], Martin Sheen, Ed Harris, Candice Bergen, Oliver Platt, and, of course, real-life wife Annette Bening, are all appearing in the story of an actress, her driver, and the rich man they work for.

- The scoop: Stone and Gosling are attempting to solidify themselves as this generation's Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy with their third film together, La La Land. This musical has already caught our ears thanks to its soundtrack; let's just hope the love story, about a jazz pianist and an actress, is as good!

Office Christmas Party
- Starring: Jennifer Aniston [125], Jason Bateman [126], and T.J. Miller
- The scoop: If you've ever been to an office Christmas party that devolved into a sh*tshow, this movie will seem eerily familiar. The cast for this comedy is pure gold; aside from the above, there's Kate McKinnon, Olivia Munn, Jillian Bell, Rob Corddry, and Matt Walsh.

Miss Sloane
- Starring: Jessica Chastain, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Alison Pill
- The scoop: This film, about a lobbyist (Sloane) attempting to pass stricter gun control legislation, could not come at a more poignant time. Chastain is a skilled actress, and given the serious subject matter, I wouldn't be surprised to see her strolling down the red carpet in 2017.

- Starring: Natalie Portman [128], Peter Sarsgaard, and Greta Gerwig
- The scoop: Portman is earning early Oscar buzz [129] for her role as Jackie Kennedy in this drama. The movie focuses on Jackie's perspective during JFK's assassination.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
- Starring: Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, and Riz Ahmed
- The scoop: This Star Wars spinoff takes place between Episodes III and IV, and centers on a group of rebels who need to steal the plans for the infamous Death Star. For better or worse, this is definitely one film everyone will be talking about.

- The scoop: Smith plays a New York City big shot whose life is sent into a tailspin after a tragic event. The drama follows him as several key figures in his life (played by Winslet, Mirren, Keira Knightley [135], and Edward Norton [136]) appear.

The Founder
- Starring: Michael Keaton, Laura Dern, and Nick Offerman
- The scoop: Despite the cheery reputation that McDonald's would like to promote, its humble beginnings were actually pretty shady. The "Founder" is actually Ray Kroc, a businessman who took hold of the McDonald family's burger chain and didn't let go until it was a multibillion-dollar operation.
