5 of the Funniest Moments From the Family Guy/Simpsons Crossover Episode

Sep 29 2014 - 11:50am

Family Guy kicked off its 13th season Sunday night with a highly anticipated crossover episode [1] titled "The Simpsons Guy." After their car gets stolen while on a trip out of town, the Griffins get stranded in Springfield and wind up seeking shelter with the Simpsons (Homer invited them after meeting at the Kwik-E-Mart, naturally). It was the first-ever mashup between The Simpsons and Family Guy, and though it wasn't an A+, out-of-the-park hit, the episode did have a few hilarious scenes. Here are five of the funniest, most crossover-y moments from the Family Guy/Simpsons season premiere.

The "Chicken Fight" That Goes On Way Too Long

If you're a Family Guy fan, you're well aware of Peter's long-standing feud with the giant chicken that always ends in a five-minute-long fight scene. Near the end of the Simpsons crossover episode, Peter gets into it with Homer and their scuffle goes from the streets, to Otto's bus, to space, and finally off a cliff. While the scene does go on a bit long for me, it was pretty funny to see how Family Guy made the infamous chicken fight work in this episode.

Stewie's Obsession With Bart

Stewie takes an immediate liking to Bart. Not only does he start dressing like him, but he also tries his hand at skateboarding and even goes so far as to kidnap and punish Bart's longtime bully, Nelson Muntz. It was pretty hilarious to see Stewie, who is normally the most self-assured, confident Family Guy character, trying so hard to be like someone else (I couldn't help but laugh at his tiny matching Bart outfit, either).

Peter and Homer's Sexy "Free Stolen Car Wash"

While searching for the Griffins' stolen car, Peter and Homer come up with the brilliant idea to host a car wash, "free for stolen cars." They don't end up finding Peter's car, but they still decide to "give these scumbags a show." Things get weird, sexy, and borderline disgusting as the two overweight, middle-aged dads dance and grind on Springfield residents' vehicles to the sound of Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar on Me."

When Lisa Helps Meg Find Her Hidden Talent

Meg starts feeling a bit self-conscious after seeing all of Lisa's various trophies and awards, so Lisa sets out to help her find out what she's good at. After going down a long list of things Meg doesn't excel at, Lisa is shocked — and very jealous — upon realizing that Meg is an amazing saxophone player (in case you're not a Simpsons person, just know that Lisa is the best saxophone player in Springfield). This was one of the best crossover moments in the episode for me, mostly because I have a soft spot for the often-ridiculed black sheep of the Griffin family. In one hilarious scene, after Lisa tells Meg to shout "I matter!" in order to boost her confidence, Peter's voice yells from downstairs, "Shut up, Meg, you don't matter!"

The Glaring-Similarities Court Scene

Peter gets taken to court after it's revealed that the Pawtucket Patriot brewery has stolen its recipe from Springfield's Duff Beer. The similarities between characters on Family Guy and The Simpsons are brought to the audience's attention in the trial scene, showing Carl Carlson sitting with Cleveland Brown, James Woods with his Simpsons counterpart, Krusty the Clown with Mort Goldman, and Mayor West sitting with Mayor Joe Quimby. The sex-obsessed Quagmire asks his Simpsons matchup Lenny, "You like sex?" to which he replies, "Eh," and Quagmire tells him, "I don't think we're very similar." I liked that the writers made fun of how much some of the characters from both shows overlap (Waylon Smithers and Bruce the performance artist? One and the same).
