Glee Recap Episode "Britney/Brittany" 2010-09-29 05:30:11

Glee-Ful Highlights From Episode "Britney/Brittany"

What did you miss on Glee this week? Just Miss Britney Spears, whose presence infuses one of the most anticipated episodes of the season, even considering this is only the second episode of the new season. Her appearance also coincides with John Stamos's, whose role as Emma's new boyfriend, Carl, actually incurs Britney's presence, as every time his dentist character puts another gleek under anesthesia, it arouses a vivid Britney Spears fantasy.

So how did it all turn out? I'll hit you with it when you

.

  • Though I loved that Heather Morris got to sing and did have a bigger role this week, I felt like the episode wasn't as Brittany-focused as I was expecting. The one tidbit we did get about her character? Her name is "Brittany S. Pierce" and she's been living in Britney Spears's shadow. But I'd contend that there is no shadow, based on her "I'm a Slave 4 U" montage, which integrates all manner of iconic Britney moments. I kept it on my DVR just so I can watch Morris's amazing dance moves again (watch the intro to the number again right here). And if you're wondering what I think Brittany's best line this week is, well, "It's Brittany . . . bitch."
  • Speaking of our girl Brit, the real-life icon does make an appearance, but if you blinked, you missed it. But I do appreciate her rocking a Cheerios uniform and extolling the virtues of ranch dressing on pizza.
  • Stamos! Stamos? Yes, Uncle Jesse Carl is the only other person as in demand as Britney this week, for it's his magical dental work that creates Britney Spears visions. The only person not on the Carl bandwagon is Mr. Schuester, who lets his jealousy and anti-Britney snob mentality rob him of letting her pop influence take over. After he bans the club from doing any Spears songs, it's ironically Carl who convinces him to be more spontaneous. His car purchase is pathetic, but Carl or no Carl, Terri or no Terri, nothing deters me from thinking that there's still a chance for a relationship for Emma and Schue. Even if it is true that Schue wears more vests than the cast of Blossom.
  • Words I never need to hear again: "naked butt sweat stain." Sue is the only person more disapproving than Will about using Britney Spears's music, especially after Jacob Ben-Israel is caught in the library doing, um, stuff. But Schue, bolstered in his rivalry with Carl, initiates a performance of a slowed-down arrangement of "Toxic," which gets my vote for best number of the night. It's a Britney Spears sex riot!
  • I'm still pulling for Artie to get Tina back, even though her and Mike Chang's "Asian fusion" is holding strong. Finally, a boy gets to do a Britney song, as Artie fantasizes about being on the football team while singing "Stronger." Not since "Single Ladies" have we seen such a display of sportsmen dancing.
  • Even Rachel Berry is not immune to Britney, and after some criticism from Santana and a shot of Novocaine, she dreams of performing "Baby . . . One More Time." She keeps wearing her Brit-inspired ensemble to keep Finn off the football team, because it makes her feel "safe and happy." Rachel almost sabotages her own relationship by forcing Finn to choose between her and football, but after she puts Quinn up to tempting Finn and he resists (I love the apparent friendship between Quinn and Rachel, by the way), the lovebirds are back on track. Though seeing Rachel in her 1999-era Britney costume was pretty epic, even better was her quoting of David After Dentist.

So was the Britney Spears episode satisfying or disappointing? I loved it in general, but had been hoping for more actual face time from Brittany and Britney. I can't wait to hear your thoughts in the comments, and don't forget to also join the Glee Club group in the Buzz Community to talk more!

Loved Artie's rendition of stronger. So good! Loved Stamos and his new role. Also loved Brittany. She's a great dancer! I am probably the only one in this camp other than Sue, but I really can't stand Schue as a character. I find him to be really annoying and can't get behind him as a protagonist, which is probably why I'm always rooting against him and Emma getting together. I hate that he bought a Corvette just because Carl has one and his performance of Toxic with the kids bothered me just because it seemed super inappropriate even for this show.

There is something so off about Heather's face. Eeek. Santana needs more songs, that girl can sing!

Rachel should have sung womanizer because of her hangup with Finn.

First off Brittany was amazing! I haven't been watching a lot of Glee so I missed how incredibly funny she is. Secondly, Britney was super cute in her cameos. As for the songs, I was less than impressed. Usually the songs have some relevance to the plot, but not in this episode except maybe Stronger and Toxic, which coincidentally were my favorite of the night. Rachel singing Baby One More Time made me cringe, as did Rachel herself. When did she become such a creep? Making Finn choose between her and football, really?

Mr. Schue dancing provocativly with his students was so wrong! I think he's hot, though, so it's all good ;)

Regardless of what everyone says, I loved it! Heather Morris was fantastic! I loved Britney's cameos as well! Also, you can't deny the fact that John Stamos looked amazing! The entire episode was fun to watch!

The acting on Glee is never really that good and I don't really tune for the stories or plots as much as I do the musical numbers so I loved this episode! I loved the singing and the dancing (all but Artie and Stronger....that was so cheesy). Love John Stamos on this show! He was actually pretty funny. I loved Rachel singing Paramore at the end but not sure why she considers it "young adult contemporary" when Paramore is a rock band(a bad ass one too).

I thought the episode was super fun! It was funny, though Shue did make me cringe a few times. I actually like the development they showed with Emma - her progress with her OCD and showing her as more than just a Mr. Shue groupie. I think the characters are all developing, just a little slowly since there are so many to address.

I think I agree with the majority here. This was a disappointing episode for me. I loved seeing Brittany's dancing, but that was really it for me. I hate it when they use the show as a vehicle for an artist's songs, instead of using songs to enhance the episode and the story. Just a really BLAH episode for me. Hope they get back on track next week....

If my daughter came home from school and said a boy was saying the things Rachel's saying to Finn, I'd want a restraining order.

Meh. Seemed promising at the beginning, but the episode totally went downhill. Everything seemed forced, no real plot, and most of the characters didn't act like themselves. The Madonna and Lady Gaga themed episodes were way better.

Anyone else think Lea Michele's voice didn't really suit "..Hit Me Baby One More Time"? I dunno, it just didn't have that power behind it like Brittany's did, or even Artie's. Not a fan of that number. I agree with everybody else, that this episode didn't really further the plot at all. But it was so much fun to watch! Sometimes I just get so tired of the storylines (love/hate with this one), so this was fun. And tlsgirl, yea, totally not feeling Finn/Rachel. I liked her with Puck, honestly, lol

Oh, and Britney's right - ranch dressing on pizza is amazing.

I'm sort of myeh on this one. I miss the beginnings of last season, when there was actual character development and a plot line or two. That said, I'm so glad that Emma was back, and Brittany was pretty awesome in this episode. What an amazing dancer! Also, is anyone else just not feeling any Finn-Rachel chemistry at all? I just don't get the two of them together at all.

I have to agree with the other comments. Where is the plot going?? There are no story lines! Just crazy Rachel has been the focus of late. Something else I agree with is the Brittany one-liners, so fun! But I'm afraid they'll over use her. She used to get something crazy to say ~ every other ep, but now it's often multiple times per ep. My fav numbers were Toxic (even though Mr. Shue should NOT have been in it, talk about awkward!) and Stronger. I liked Stronger cuz it wasn't the video remade. It was orginal and fun for the show, not a copycat. John Stamos was fun! I'm excited for more of him. And I'd like more Emma please, let's have her and Shue become friends again, shall we?

I would just like to say that Jacob Ben Israel is the new Brittany. I know it may be an overstatement, but I get super excited to hear what he will say next.

I am very MEH about the whole episode, which makes me sad. I wish the musical numbers were more interesting. They were identical to the original videos - usually when Glee covers a song, it actually relates (at least a little bit!) to some story line. It felt too contrived, which makes me haz a sad. Also, a question: Sue catches that kid (the one who loves Rachel - forgetting his name) masturbating in the library at night? And he's totally naked? Is he watching her? Is Rachel there? I was so confused!

i feel like i should clarify....by pushing the story along a little i meant introducing us to Emma's new guy, the Artie/Tina/Mike relationship (i lol'd at the "asian fusion" comment), more of Rachel's craziness.... also, i'm really tired of Rachel's sad songs ending the episodes. it totally didn't fit in with all the fun stuff they just did. at least end it with a Britney Spears song!
