Glee Recap "Funk" Episode 2010-06-02 05:30:00

Glee-ful Highlights From This Week's Episode "Funk"

Everyone's in a funk on this week's Glee, both emotionally and musically. Schue's divorce goes through, Rachel's and Sue's hearts are broken, and there's more than one opportunity to get down. Depression decides the assignment and theme, but thankfully it's not all a huge bummer.

This is one of the more entertaining episodes of this half of the season, but there are definitely some high (Queen!) and low (that almost makeout!) moments to go over. To discuss it all, just

  • Vocal Adrenaline is back, and they are ready to rumble. Jesse has switched back to sing with them, and though I don't understand why he's fired up enough to be so mean to Rachel onstage, I appreciate that he brings the same fire to the performance of "Another One Bites the Dust." Jonathan Groff has slowly been winning my heart, but channeling Freddie Mercury made me putty in his hands. Sigh. Their musical throwdown is meant to intimidate our kids, and it works — as does the toilet papering of the choir room. To retaliate, Puck and Finn slash the tires of the VA members.
  • Let's talk about Mr. Schue. I know he's depressed with his divorce finalization from Terri and all, but it seems like he forgets he's a teacher in front of his students. Breaking Sue's trophy, encouraging the kids to prank Carmel High back? Doesn't he need to set a good example? Confessing his relationship shortcomings to the kids? Isn't that a little inappropriate? Gah, rant over.
  • Speaking of inappropriate, I was way creeped out by Schue's seduction of Sue set to "Tell Me Something Good" (I can still see his butt winking at me when I close my eyes), but it's also one of the funniest scenes that's been on Glee. Turns out that Sue does have feelings for Schue, and she's furious when he stands her up for a date — the reaction he's aiming for. What he isn't aiming for is her depression over the whole thing, and he's the one that has to talk her out of it. Naturally, she leads her team to victory that weekend (thanks to Kurt's 14-minute Celine Dion medley in French!) and she places her comically large trophy in the choir room.
  • Puck and Finn do Beck's "Loser" at their new jobs. I die. Though Finn isn't quite as, um, comfortable as Puck is, I loved that they tackle the alt rock classic. Meanwhile, Terri sees a young Mr. Schue in Finn and befriends him. It's kind of sweet, kind of awkward.
  • Quinn wants to get funky too! The pregnant teen channels her frustration into "It's a Man's World," flanked by the Unwed Mothership Connection. I'd love to comment on Dianna Agron's performance, but I witnessed too many fake buns in their respective ovens writhing in sequence that I've been rendered speechless.
  • Mercedes, Finn, and Pucky Puck bring Marky Mark to the club with "Good Vibrations," and Schue derides it as "not funky enough," but hey, I had a good time.
  • Poor Rachel! In a distinct downgrade from slushees, Jesse and the entire Vocal Adrenaline team eggs her in the parking lot. Oh, Jesse St. James, how can you be so cute and so cruel at the same time?! The club gets their revenge anyway, when they show Vocal Adrenaline the one thing they can't do: funk. Fear shows on their faces, despite their being "soulless automatons."

Errr, now I just hate Jesse more. Never liked him, hope he goes away. I did love the more Puck line in this episode - him doing Good Vibrations and Loser was awesome. Sigh, so hot. Seriously though, where is Emma? I miss her strawberry scrubbing and cute outfits.

WHY JESSE, WHY????? I really don't understand why he is acting so angry towards rachel. I love the mercedes/quinn friendship and I'm really excited for them to live together. And... there were a lot of parts in this episode that really creeped me out.

I thought this was one of the funniest episodes in a long time! The whole Mr Schue/Sue thing was hilaaariouus. I LOL'ed several times, although I could do without the remaining mental images of him bending over..... The Finn/Terri story was awkward but in a good Glee kind of way. And Rachel and Jesse, sigh. They're deliberately trying to confuse us in this episode, so I'm looking forward to see how that story develops :-)

I loved how all the male Glee clubbers jumped to Rachel's defense after the egging! They love her even though she can be SO obnoxious. :) Shue creeped me out this week though...

I don't get the whole Jesse/Rachel thing either...he left and went back to VA and he had left her before that...why would she be all happy and cheery running out to the parking lot to see him? I did feel really bad for her at that point and would have loved to see the rest of New Directions come out and help her out. I AM SO UPSET THAT NEXT WEEK IS THE LAST EPISODE!!! :(

I liked Rachel and Jesse's relationship. And I really don't watch Glee for realistic. The whole show is unrealistic, that is what is fun about it, I mean, it's musical. The only thing bad written about it was how they broke up. The rest I thought it was cute. I loved Beck cover. But I didn't like Quinn solo. A little weird in my opinion. The whole Shue and Sue made me embarrassed LOL

Great episode!!! Loser was the highlight for me, and I definitely would have liked that part to have been longer. Loved the hump day line! I also liked the pearls with Sue's tracksuit. It was a small detail, but completely hilarious! I hope the Quinn/Mercedes friendship is developed further and not just dropped in a future episode like many of the relationships on the show. Terry is totally creepy.

Yeah, the Rachel/Jesse relationship was just inconsistent and stupid. But one of Glee's weak points is consistency. People like each other and/or dislike when it suits the plot, not when it's realistic.

I guess I'm still confused about the Rachel/Jesse on again-off again relationship. Loved "Loser" and loved, loved, loved Sue dressing up for her date with Schue by adding pearls to the tracksuit!

I'm loving the Quinn/Mercedes friendship that's been developing. So sweet. And Quinn kicked ass in her solo. Am I the only one who didn't like Jesse? I'm glad he's no longer sniffing around Rachel.

- LOVED "Loser" in 'Sheets n Things' ... hilarious. I wish it was longer ! - Terry befriending Finn was a little creepy to me, especially when she asked how old he was. She seems like she desperately wants to be that popular girl she was in high school, and sees Finn as the perfect boyfriend for the high school version of her. It was ... weird. - Jesse St. James ! Why are you so MEAN? You broke Rachel's heart and you're still continuing to be an ass. Not cool. - Kurt's 14-minute Celine Dion medley in French - HA! I loved when he ran on screen, said something in French (I missed it), and did a high kick. - Schue's seduction song was creepy. And quite uncomfortable. - Quinn moving in with Mercedes? Um, okay. Random.

I almost screamed (in happiness) when I heard "Loser's" opening guitar chords. That was so unexpected! Alt rock in Glee? Loved it!
