Gravity Wins the Box Office For the Third Week in a Row

Box Office: Gravity Holds On to Its No. 1 Spot

Gravity brought in $31 million this weekend, besting all of the week's new releases and keeping the No. 1 box office spot for the third weekend in a row. Captain Phillips came in second place with $17.3 million, while horror revival Carrie underperformed a little with a total of $17 million. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 followed with $10.1 million, while Escape Plan earned $9.8 million in its first week of release. As for the other new releases? Benedict Cumberbatch's The Fifth Estate was a complete failure, taking in a bare-bones $1.7 million — the worst opening for a movie in 2013 in regular release. Meanwhile, 12 Years a Slave had a decent opening with $960,000 in just 19 theaters.
