14 Extremely Grim Questions We Have After Watching The Handmaid's Tale Season 3 Trailer

May 4 2019 - 12:10pm

The gripping season two finale [1] of Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale [2] seems like it aired an eternity ago, and ever since then we've been desperate for details about how season three might shape up now that June has decided to stay in Gilead. Fortunately the latest trailer [3] for the dystopian drama is ripe with Easter eggs and a few key plot details that tease what our favorite bonnet-wearing heroine is up to (to put it bluntly, it looks like she's going to f*ck sh*t up). Since the footage moves quickly, we decided to take a closer look at a few scenes throughout. After all, there's still quite a bit of time to kill until the show's third season premieres on June 5 [4].

Will June Be Punished For Trying to Escape?

At the very start of the trailer, June (Elisabeth Moss [6]) discusses being "punished" for heresy, since no one in Gilead can technically be punished for being "part of the resistance" — that would mean its leaders would have to admit there is a resistance. Is she the one scrubbing the floor? Is this a flashback? We have to imagine that she'll get in trouble for her stunt in the season two finale in some way.

Will Emily Escape to Canada With June's Baby?

Will Emily (Alexis Bledel) be able to escape with June and Nick's baby? A quick few shots early on in the trailer show her running through the woods as search lights scan the trees and a helicopter can be heard flying above her.

But not to fear! Later on in the trailer, Emily can be seen walking through what looks like a hospital in Canada as doctors and nurses cheer her on from above.

How Will June Deal With the Separation of Yet Another Child?

We see June sobbing happy tears as she watches Luke (O-T Fagbenle) holding a baby that has to be the one Emily smuggled out of Gilead for her. She might be heartbroken, but clearly she knows that her baby is in a better place.

Does June Work For Joseph Lawrence Now?

One of the ways we can imagine June escaping a hanging when she returns to Gilead is by being sheltered in the home of Joseph Lawrence (Bradley Whitford), the commander who previously helped Emily get to safety. However, can he actually be trusted? He asks June if she's been "working hard" in the trailer, and a later seen shows them facing off toe-to-toe, almost like June is confronting him about something.

Will June Save Hannah?

We've waited long enough, Handmaid's Tale writers! Please, pretty please with a cherry on top, give us a scene of June and Hannah riding off into the sunset together. We beg of you!

Who Are June's Allies?

June mentions in the trailer that she's bulking up on allies in Gilead, which clearly means her fellow handmaids, but also some unexpected supporters.

What Is Serena Joy Up To?

And who might those unexpected supporters be? Nick, of course, but also Serena Waterford herself. We see her going on (or coming back from?) a trip somewhere that was far enough to require a plane in this shot.

Is Serena Going to Help June? Looks Like It . . .

There are multiple scenes in the trailer that see Mrs. Waterford and her former handmaid interacting. While she might be pissed that June took away "her" daughter, perhaps that was the moment that truly lifted the wool from her eyes. In this particular scene, which features the two sitting down for an intense chat, June say,s "As Mrs. Waterford you have influence." Though Serena claims she does only "Up to a point," we wouldn't sell her so short.

Will Commander Waterford Find Out About June and Serena?

There's a shot of Serena being led by her husband into a room full of men in the government. Are they interrogating her? Have they found her out? Or is she using her connections to help the resistance?

What Are Serena and June Burning?

A dramatic scene shows Serena and June standing in front of the Waterford's bed, which is engulfed in flame (as is the rest of the room). Then the two hold hands. It's unclear if this is a dream sequence or will actually come to pass, but either way, it's badass.

Are June and Nick Still Together?

They hold hands in the trailer and Nick gives her a cheeky greeting when he sees her in a Gilead government building, so we're betting yes.

Yes, Aunt Lydia Is Still Alive

Apparently it takes more than a stab wound and being thrown down the stairs to kill her!

Will June Become a Martha at Some Point?

What we can't figure out is whether or not June becomes a Martha earlier on in the new season — to escape detection after her escape in the finale — or if this is a disguise that helps her flee to Canada at some point.

What's Up With the Washington Monument?

It looks like the capital has gotten a bit of a makeover. Yikes.
