Has The Office Jumped the Shark?

This post comes from The Office! group member Whiplash.

I've been giving this a lot of thought (too much thought, actually) and I believe that the answer is a resounding YES.

It's true that there are still some funny one-liners and some chuckle-inducing situations, but all in all, the show just isn't nearly as funny anymore. It's not necessarily bad, but I find myself not caring about any of it. And the reason can be summed up in two words: Jim Halpert.

I freaking LOVED Jim when I started watching the show. He was ridiculously adorable and hilarious. His relationship with Pam was so much fun to watch. And his pranks on Dwight and mugs to the camera were the funniest parts of the show. Now? He's married to Pam. He's a manager so he doesn't goof off anymore. Dwight still hates him but he doesn't retaliate. He's got basically no sense of humor anymore. And I'm disappointed.

I'm also pretty much over Michael being an idiot. It was always funny but now it's just the same thing over and over again. I find myself caring more about the supporting characters — Andy, Kevin, Stanley and Creed are pretty consistently funny. But they can't carry the show.

Glad my hubby and I aren't the lonely ones! I don't usually laugh much any more. They just make me depressed and kind of down.

I think the Brits had it right finishing after 3 seasons.

sadly, I agree. It's my favorite show but it's just losing it's magic. The only thing I look forward to is Andy, esp to see what happens between him and Erin

I agree. I think this should be the last season. Dwight is usually my favorite character and he hasn't been funny this season at all.

Maybe we can hold out hope for the Christmas episode. They have always been hilarious!

I also have been feeling this way. I think the main reason is just no character development. Michael never really changes, and neither do any of the other characters. It just feels stagnant. They need to do something big again like when Michael and Pam and Ryan started that rival branch of Dunder Mifflin. That was good television!

Unfortunately I have to agree too. I was trying to give this season a chance, but after the underwhelming wedding episode, it has continued to go down hill. I agree that Jim, the show's best character, has completely lost his charm. I would add that all the plotlines this season are depressing. The Office has always played on awkward situations for laughs, but nothing is funny about Michael being mean to Pam's mom because of her age or him denying kids tuition for college. Any good one liners just seem like sad attempts to break up the drama. Disappointing.

I agree... certain plot points just don't really seem to be going anywhere... I think they can still get some more material and laughs out of some of the supporting characters. I really want to see them go somewhere with Andy and Erin... Less focus on Jim, Pam, and Michael.

I have to agree :(. Now that it is on opposite Grey's and Fringe, I watch The Office on-line and I frequently forget until Monday when people at work want to discuss.

Though I will always love The Office, I do think that this season hasn't been great. Jim and Pam aren't even remotely interesting anymore, and I just wish that they would focus more on the other people in the office, like Ryan, Kelly, Creed, Andy, and Erin.
