The Hate U Give [1] is just one of the many book-to-movie adaptations [2] we are looking forward to this year. The first trailer for the film [3] dropped during the BET Awards [4], and we already have serious chills. Not only is the film based on Angie Thomas's empowering New York Times bestseller of the same name, but it also features a star-studded cast. Amandla Stenberg will lead the movie alongside Riverdale [5]'s KJ Apa, Avengers: Infinity War [6]'s Anthony Mackie, Insecure [7]'s Issa Rae, and rapper Common. And that's just scratching the surface! Stenberg stars as a young girl who witnesses the fatal and unjust shooting of her childhood best friend by a police officer.
KJ Apa as Chris
Apa was cast as Starr's well-meaning boyfriend after the original actor, YouTube star Kian Lawley, was fired from the film due to a racist video [9].
Regina Hall as Lisa Carter
Hall is set to play Starr's mother [10], Lisa.
Russell Hornsby as Maverick Carter
The Seven Seconds actor will play Starr's tough-but-fair father, Maverick "Big Mav" Carter, [11] in the film.
Common as Uncle Carlos Carter
The Oscar award-winning rapper is on board as Starr's uncle [12], who also happens to work in the same police force as the cop who shot her friend.
Lamar Johnson as Seven Carter
Kings actor Lamar Johnson will play Starr's older half-brother [13], who's the son of her father, Maverick, and his ex, Iesha.
Sabrina Carpenter as Hailey
The former Girl Meets World actor has signed on to play one of Starr's best friends [14] from her prep school.
Megan Lawless as Maya
The up-and-coming actress, who previously appeared in Table 19, will play Starr's other BFF, Maya.
Anthony Mackie as King
The Avengers: Infinity War actor will play terrifying local drug dealer [15], King.
Issa Rae as April Ofrah
Rae's character is a local activist [16] who helps Starr speak up about the injustices in her community.
Algee Smith as Khalil
The Detroit actor will play Starr's childhood best friend [17] who gets fatally shot by a cop, setting the events of the story in motion.
Dominique Fishback as Kenya
Fishback will appear as Seven's half-sister [18] (aka Iesha's daughter), and one of Starr's confidants.
