• What it's about: A young woman (Zoe Kazan) and her daughter get stranded alone in the woods after hitting a dog. As misfortune would have it, though, they're not so alone after all: some sort of otherworldly creature is on the hunt.

The Boy

Greta must instead care for a life-size doll of the same name, and if she doesn't follow a very strict and specific set of rules, she faces deadly consequences.

Intruders

• What it's about: Anna suffers from crippling agoraphobia, which prevents her from going outside. So, when three intruders break into her home, she's out of luck. What the criminals don't know, though, is that she isn't as helpless as she seems.

• What it's about: Set in 17th century New England, The Witch depicts a family who faces an unfortunate string of horrors: the disappearance of their newborn son, failing crops, diseased lifestock, and more. They begin to turn on one another, but is something much more sinister lurking in the woods?

10 Cloverfield Lane

• What it's about: OK, so the movie doesn't exactly read as horror: the three main characters spend their days in an underground bunker, playing games and killing time. That said, there are definite sinister undertones [9], and if we look to the original Cloverfield, things could get REAL scary.

Hush

• What it's about: A dead, mute woman has escaped to the woods to finish her most recently novel. She quickly learns she's not alone when a masked man makes his sinster presence known. What follows is a terrifying — and exceptionally quiet — game of cat and mouse. We can confirm it's scary as hell [10], and good.

• What it's about: This one's an anthology film that portrays classic holidays with a seriously dark twist.

Bite

• What it's about: A bride-to-be finds herself bitten by an unknown insect during her bachelorette party weekend. She soon learns it's not just any old bug bite.

The Conjuring 2

• What it's about: Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga) are back with the chilling second chapter of The Conjuring. This time, they're taking on the Enfield Poltergeist, another true story about a family plagued by a supernatural presence in England.

The Purge: Election Year

• What it's about: 15 years after her family's grisly murder during The Purge, one woman runs for political office . . . on the platform that she'll rid the nation of this day for good. When the night arrives and all crime becomes legal once again [11], though, her safety could be seriously compromised.
