Blair Underwood Doesn't Shy Away From Sexy Time in Ironside

Blair Underwood and the cast of Ironside took to the TCA stage today to talk about, among many other things, some of the taboos of putting a main character in a wheelchair — especially when that character is a cop. Underwood and his costars, including Greek's Spencer Grammer, filled reporters in on why their new show is (almost) nothing like the original, and what viewers can expect to see this season.

  • The show is a remake of the 1967 series of the same name, but one big difference between Underwood's Robert Ironside and the original TV detective? Underwood isn't afraid of a little sexy time just because he's in a wheelchair. He definitely doesn't shy away from it in the pilot, and when asked whether sex scenes were stipulated in his contract, Underwood joked, "No, my wife made sure of that."
  • In fact, Underwood explained that they're taking quite a few liberties with the story: "We took his name, the fact that he's a detective, and the fact that he's in a wheelchair." Underwood and the producers did explain that they were going for a '70s police movie feel, "specifically The French Connection and Serpico, at the same time not feeling dated," said Underwood.
  • Grammer admitted the police drama Ironside is quite different than her past show, Greek: "I love doing comedy — it's great — but I wanted to do something more serious." She's not the only happy one: when asked what her father, Kelsey Grammer (aka Frasier Crane), thinks of her new role, she beamed: "He was just very excited to see his daughter be so successful and be on NBC, following in his footsteps."
