Why You Should Be Watching Golden Globe Winner Jane the Virgin

Jan 12 2015 - 5:00pm

It started with an entirely ridiculous premise — a girl in her 20s, Jane (Gina Rodriguez), accidentally gets inseminated in a medical mix-up, and she happens to be a virgin. But almost midway through its first season, Jane the Virgin seems to grow even more delightful, heartfelt, and yes, ridiculous — and now it's a Golden Globe winner [1]! We've fallen hard for the telenovela-style show (which has been renewed for a second season [2]), and there are lots of reasons why; here are the main ones, which, if you're watching, you'll probably agree with. And if you're not watching, let this — and Gina Rodriguez's tearful acceptance speech [3] — be a notice to you that you're missing out!

1. First, There's Jane

Jane is Gina Rodriguez's breakout role, and we couldn't be more smitten with her; she completely deserves her lead actress win. She's cute and charming, has excellent comedic timing, and has equally good dramatic chops. Essentially, she's what makes this show work. When things are emotional or weird (and things get very weird), Rodriguez transmits it in an entirely sympathetic way.

Like This

Yeah, this premise is kooky and shouldn't work. It's not just Rodriguez's acting that makes it, though; the telenovela style does too. It's self-consciously campy, with captions on the screen that fill you in and make you laugh.

2. Then There's Jane's Relationship With Her Mom

There are lot of relationships and family dynamics on this show, but I find myself getting more and more invested in the mother/daughter one between Jane and her single mom, Xiomara. Xo, as she's called, has made a lot of mistakes — such as not telling Jane the identity of her birth father for years — but this stuff only serves to humanize her.

She's Sort of the Anti-Lorelai Gilmore

Like when she shook her thang during one of young Jane's parties.

But There's Heart Behind It

See? Xo was just protecting Jane.

3. And Of Course, Heeere's Rogelio

Jane's father, whose identity Xo hadn't disclosed, is this guy: flashy telenovela star Rogelio De La Vega. He really, really loves the spotlight, and it's pretty hilarious.

But He's a Sweetheart Too

Watching his relationship with Jane develop from the beginning has been heartwarming, even when it's understandably awkward.

4. Then There's Rafael

Rafael is the father of Jane's unborn child — it's his sperm that was supposed to go to his estranged wife, Petra — but as luck would have it, he and Jane have history. Their sexual tension has led to something more, and we totally get it — Rafael's so dreamy.

5. There's So Much Messiness

Part of the reason why that sexual tension has been weird is because Jane was with Michael when she got pregnant. Then, they got engaged a short time after, which didn't turn out to be a bed of roses.

6. No, Really, It's Very Messy

Michael isn't the only odd man out; Rafael's wife, Petra, is a big-time schemer. First, she wanted the baby to get a bigger payout for her prenup. Then, when that went to crap, she resorts to accusing Rafael of domestic abuse. And there's the two small matters of how she had been cheating on Raf with his best friend and how she's apparently not who she says she is. It's a lot, but having new mysteries unfold every week makes this show seriously addictive.

7. There's Drama, Drama, Drama

Besides the identity questions and sperm-ending-up-in-the-wrong-person stuff, there is still more drama. FYI, this isn't dramatic because it's a steamy lesbian kiss.

It's Dramatic Because of This

Yep, the doctor who accidentally inseminates Jane is Rafael's sister, Luisa, who's having an affair with their stepmother. Who is now trying to gaslight Luisa so people won't find out about the affair. Told you it was dramatic.

8. Did We Mention How Murder-y It Is?

Oh yes, amid all the craziness, there have also been two murders since the series started, and they're still unsolved.

9. And Finally, This Unlikely Romance

While Jane tries to navigate the situation of being a pregnant virgin and just getting to know her birth father, something very sweet has been happening at the center of it all: Jane and Rafael have been falling for each other. It's already full of complications, and Rodriguez herself has promised even more [4]. And we can't wait.
