Editors' Picks: Entertainment Must Haves For January

Jan 5 2015 - 9:00am

The New Year is here! So many entertainment possibilities are on the horizon — but we've handpicked just a few that we're really looking forward to in January. The reign of TV's Winter hiatus will soon come to an end, with all of our favorite shows returning with new episodes. We're not just talking about those that have been off the air since December; Parks and Recreation, Glee, and more shows we haven't seen since Spring will be back! Plus, the Golden Globes and Oscar nominations signal that award season is in full swing. Take a look ahead at all the best entertainment bets this month!

The Bachelor

Fellow rose-ceremony addicts, assemble! The Bachelor [1] is returning on Jan. 5 with season 19. We've already met the ladies [2] competing for farmer Chris Soules, and let's be real: we're all dying to know what a cadaver tissue saleswoman really does. Plus, Chris was really wonderful on Andi's season — let's cross our fingers that he finds love.

Oscar Nominations

While the other major award shows have announced their nominations [3], what we all really want to know is: who's getting an Oscar nomination? The big kahuna of award season will announce its nods on Jan. 15, and though we're pretty sure some folks have it in the bag — like Michael Keaton and Eddie Redmayne — we're even more excited about the potential surprises.

The Sundance Film Festival

Not everyone can make it to the snowy film festival, which takes place this year between Jan. 21 and Feb. 1, but the rest of us still reap the rewards of the best of the fest when the buzziest movies get picked up for distribution. In 2014, it was Whiplash, and the year before, it was Fruitvale Station. We can't wait to find out what the next big little movie is.

The End of Winter Hiatus

Hallelujah! Primetime is coming back. Throughout January and February [4], all your favorite shows will be returning with new episodes. While it's been nice to have a little break, it'll be even better to have How to Get Away With Murder, The Mindy Project, and more shows back again. Plus, there will finally be new seasons of Comedy Central favorites like Broad City and Kroll Show to love!

Parks and Recreation

Speaking of shows that have been off the air for an impossibly long time, Parks and Recreation is returning for its final season on Jan. 13! As seen in the recent trailer [5], the year is 2017, and there are a lot of changes amongst the group. (Andy has his own TV show!) We're sad that the series is ending, but that just means that we'll need to cherish every second of this season.

Togetherness

HBO has a new comedy series this month, and this time, it's fun for the whole family. Sort of. The Duplass brothers (including Mark, who's starring) are bringing this look at modern marriage and family relationships, and we've gotten a peek and love what we've seen so far. Wickedly funny and real, Melanie Lynskey and Amanda Peet [6] also costar. Togetherness premieres on Jan. 11.

SV

Girls

We have tons of pictures [7] and several trailers [8] for Girls' upcoming fourth season — all that's left is to actually watch it! Hannah is going on new adventures come Jan. 11, when she heads to Iowa with Elijah in tow. Everyone's relationships look complicated, but then again, when aren't they complicated? Let's be honest; the most ridiculous drama, the better.

MP

Pretty Little Liars

It's time for more murder, deception, and sexiness when Pretty Little Liars [9] comes back after the recent holiday episode [10]. The rest of the season returns on Jan. 6, and since we've been compiling the latest evidence on who A is [11], we're ready to reevaluate with more clues.

SV

Glee

Can you believe we got through an entire Fall without Glee? The show is returning for its farewell season on Jan. 9, and change is in the air. The original crew is back at McKinley High to help recruit for the floundering glee club. Rachel is crooning "Let It Go," [12] and judging by all the pictures [13], Sam and Puck are still superhot. Yes, it's about to be a good season, indeed.

The Wedding Ringer

Listen, I have soft spots for both Kevin Hart and Josh Gad, so a movie with them together is practically a must-see. Hart stars as a guy who makes a business out of being a convincing best man and providing groomsmen for men with no friends, making him pretty much the Hitch of wedding parties. The movie opens Jan. 16, and you can check out the trailer [14] now!

MP

Mortdecai

It feels like the rare film that shows Johnny Depp [15] without an elaborate costume, so with just the mustache and blond hair as the title character in Mortdecai, we're excited to see him. The trailer [16] looked charming and delightful, despite the month's notorious reputation for putting out less-than-great films. The movie, which also stars Gwyneth Paltrow [17] and Ewan McGregor [18], comes out on Jan. 23.

Award Shows

Before the Oscars crowns its winners in February, we still have a whole slew of shows to watch. At the top of our list is the Golden Globes, coming on Jan. 11, which will reunite Tina Fey [19] and Amy Poehler [20] as hosts. Then, on Jan. 15, Critics' Choice will have its go, with the SAG Awards wrapping up the month on Jan. 25.
