Casting Update: Who's in For Les Misérables

The casting for upcoming musical Les Misérables is shaping right up, with most of the major parts now filled. The most recent news is that stage actress Samantha Barks will be taking on the role of Eponine, beating out previously rumored hopefuls like Taylor Swift and Lea Michele. The Tom Hooper-directed musical is one of the movies we're most looking forward to this year, so we've been eagerly eating up all the casting news. If you're also a fan of the beloved stage musical set during the 19th century, check out who's been cast in the film so far.

  • Hugh Jackman will star as protagonist Jean Valjean, a former prisoner who adopts orphan Cosette and turns his life around as the mayor of a small town.
  • Anne Hathaway will play Fantine, a woman forced to become a prostitute to support her young daughter, Cosette. She dies early on and requests that Jean Valjean raise her daughter in her absence.
  • Russell Crowe is attached to play Inspector Javert, Valjean's nemesis who becomes obsessed with bringing Valjean to justice.
  • Amanda Seyfried will play Cosette, Jean Valjean's adopted daughter, who falls for Marius.
  • Sacha Baron Cohen has the role of villain Monsieur Thenardier, a man who forces Cosette to work when she's a small child.
  • Eddie Redmayne will play Marius, a young man involved in the revolution, and the object of affection for both Cosette and Eponine.
  • The role of Eponine, the woman who is also in love with Marius, has gone to an unknown: Samantha Barks, a British stage actress who has played the part onstage before.
  • Aaron Tveit has a supporting role as Enjolras, a friend of Marius's who is also involved in a student-led revolution.

Here's a idea for the role of Eponine. They already have enough well known actors signed. Why not reward one of the deserving actresses that have played the role on the Broadway stage.Any one of them have way more talent than those being mentioned.

If the rumor of Jackie Evancho are true, I don't think anybody could question her singing ability. Though they may have a problem of her out singing the older performers. Do a google search of Britains got talent 2011 Jackie Evancho performs in the show Not sure Amanda Seyfried could stay up with her.

There is a rummer that Jackie Evancho may play young Cosette, She looks like a young Amanda Seyfried and she just finished filming with Robert Redford in the movie the Company you Keep as Redford's daughter.

Agree about Taylor - she just doesn't have the vocal range. Still on the fence about Amanda ... have only heard her sing in Mama Mia and well, let's face it, that's not exactly Les Miserables.

Les Mis is not set during the French Revolution.

Hugh is perfect for the role, but Amanda Seyfried?!? Not too thrilled about that one, I guess Cosette is a slightly dull heroine though, so she could probably pull that off

While I agree that Lea Michele is extremely talented, I think she might be too stage-y for a movie version. I didn't see New Years Eve so I have no idea if she can tone it done or not. I wouldn't mind casting an unknown actress with pipes get the spot. Not every role has to be filled with a well known actor. But please, not Taylor Swift!

Totally agree about Taylor Swift not being right for the part. Though she's a singer, she's not great. And let's not forget that there has to be some acting in this film. Lea Michele is a bit annoying to me, but she deserves the part. I would figure she'd be a no-brainer what with her meteoric rise to fame and the popularity of glee. And that whole talent thing.

Lea Michele makes me skin crawl and I'm rooting for her over Taylor. Taylor effing Swift is a decent enough pop star but girl can hardly sing live, let alone hit Eponine's notes. If I could pick anybody from who's said to be up for the role, I'd go with Evan Rachel Wood. She has the right amount of edge.

I won't be watching if Taylor gets the role. I'm sorry but I'm rooting for Lea Michele and I don't even like her very much.

I can only hope the Taylor Swift rumor is just to create buzz about the movie. That girls vocal range is severely lacking... unless she's been hiding it this whole time! what a master plan.
