"Lost" Episode 18: "D.O.C."

Being such a big Sun fan, this week's episode of "Lost" was a huge treat. And it wasn't just any Sun episode, but one in which she kicked some butt in her flashbacks.

Several other crazy things happened, so if you haven't watched the episode and want to learn exactly what happened, check out WhiplashGirlchild's recap in the LOST Fans group.

For my spoilerific musings,

  • Okay, last things first here: the Power Ranger lady from the sky says they found the remains of Oceanic flight 815 and nobody survived. So, either she's lying, or the finding of the remains was staged, or there are alternate universe/time bending things going on here.
  • Let me get this straight: On this island, pregnant ladies die and men have the sperm of superheroes? I'm sorry — climbing up on soapbox now... there we go — I find it annoying that nearly all the mothers on this show — indeed motherhood itself — are villainized or otherwise rendered useless. Kate's mother is evil, Claire's mother is comatose, now Jin's mother is a crazy manipulative prostitute, etcetera. Meanwhile, the relationships that seem to be most important and complex to the Losties are those they have with their fathers. And now on this island, the most feminine thing in the world — having babies — brings about death, while men become more virile and manlier than the rest of the world. If I may: WTF? *Stepping down, pushing soapbox neatly aside.*
  • Mikhail (Eyepatch Guy) is alive! He's alive!
  • At first I thought maybe it was Jin's superhuman sperm count making him so violent toward Mikhail, but then I remembered that he used to do that sort of thing for, you know, his job.
  • Anyone else think of Dirty Dancing when Sun went to ask her dad for money but couldn't tell him what it was for? Maybe I've just seen that movie too many times.
  • Speaking of the lady of the hour, I love-love-love Sun. She tracks down her father-in-law, and then actually honors his wish to keep the "shame" from Jin. Then she's totally badass in the way she gets her dad to give her the money (though I guess that's how Jin came to be doing the dirty work for her father). Finally, she gives the money to Jin's mother, but not before telling her what's-what.

  • From which "other women" does Juliet intend to take "samples"? I think Juliet is a snake.
  • Power Ranger's name is actually Naomi, so I will now stop saying "Power Ranger." Anyway, Naomi knows a lot of languages. According to Lostpedia, she spoke in Spanish, Italian, "an Asian language that Jin says is Chinese," and Portugese. They go on to claim that when she mutters in Portugese and Mikhail says she said "thank you," it was actually more like "I am not alone."

And I've always enjoyed the Sun/Jin flashbacks. They're my favorite couple on the show - they're both bad-a$$es!

Everyone on this show has daddy issues. When they showed Jin's father as this loving, caring man, I thought, YAY! Finally one character doesn't have daddy issues! But then he said that he didn't know if he was Jin's father or not, but he raised him as his own anyway. So now I think that Jin's real father must be someone island-related. I wonder if Jack and Claire have another half-sibling? Stranger things have happened on this show.

"At first I thought maybe it was Jin's superhuman sperm count making him so violent toward Mikhail, but then I remembered that he used to do that sort of thing for, you know, his job." That, made my day. Thank you. And yeah, the job that Sun just bought for him without his permission. Such a good episode. I'm happy to see that I'm not the only Jin/Sun fan (I really thought I was).

I'm not sure if anyone else caught this but at the very end of the epy when she's putting Sun's info on the tape she says something to the affect of "I'll have a sample from Austin soon." Hasn't Kate been referred to with a name like that before?

I'm so excited about the prospect of Kate being pregnant with Sawyer's baby. Love it love it!

I agree with the dumping on women viewpoint. Sadly, it's all too common in movies and TV shows. I personally was thrilled that the baby was Jin's and knew right away that Sun was crying with joy, not sadness at being doomed to die. That would have been awful if Sun had put Jin in the same position as his father by leaving him with an illegitimate baby. I don't think they'll end up killing her, but you never know since the creators love to dump on women so much. :-) Juliette's comment about the super-sperm made me think Kate is definitely pregnant. Ah, what a fun addition to the love triangle that will be! I think Juliette genuinely hates Ben and (most) of what she is doing, but that doesn't make me like her. I feel slightly sorry for her, but think she was incredibly stupid to get involved in the first place, and I really dislike her. I think she's doing this stuff for Ben for her own selfish reasons. I wonder what samples she's taking? She didn't take any blood from Sun, right, just did the ultrasound? And she said she hadn't gotten one yet from Austin (Kate), so even if they did draw blood from Kate when they had her prisoner, that couldn't have been the sample she needed. My first reaction to the 815 thing is that there was some time warp, but I'm more inclined to believe now that the Others staged it. I hope Hurley questions the hell out of her. Will be interesting to hear her say what date she thinks it is, though.

Okay, I've got 2 theories after watching the episode. The fence is designed to keep out the monster, so it's not completely deadly to humans. Mikhail was almost killed but because the island heals people faster, he was okay. When Naomi said that everyone on the plane had died, that kind of adds to the purgatory theory that's been floating around the internet since season 1. The theory is that everyone on the plane died when it crashed and the island is a type of purgatory. Although the creators have shot down this theory before, maybe they were just trying to throw us off.

i just don't see them killing off sun, juliet will "save the day" in the last 30 seconds. the guy who fried was sort of sneering when he said "i already died once this week", so something is up there. maybe an evil twin, lol. the no survivors bit was interesting. i didn't like the way her line was delivered. if you are in as much pain as she would have been i don't think it occurs to you to say "you all died" i think it's "that flight had no survivors" or "LIAR!" also, would sun REALLY be concerned about who the father of the baby was if she had been a castaway for 3 months? she's on an island for gosh sakes, almost no medical care even without the island curse, that alone is cause for concern. then you add the polar bears, black smoke, others. the paternity of the baby is the least of your worries! the lines of the actors are starting to not ring true to character (or circumstance) too much of the time. it's distracting to me. last week when the boys decided to go camping i thought "hello, what have you been doing since the crash?" sun is very cute. julite is okay, the "i hate you" at the end of the tape made her seem like she was being forced to gather data against her will. can't wait to see where all of this goes! where is michael?

It was good but like half way through the episode, there was a problem with the audio. They didn't fix it until 10 minutes till the end of the episode. but its nice to get a little back story on Sun and Jin.

the only person with an actual good dad but stil has daddy issues is jin. His dad is such a good person, he's ashame to bad fo him.

Jin's dad is so cute! I especially loved seeing how happy he was when he saw Sun. I like Juliet. I think she obviously sincerely dislikes Ben and being on the island, so whatever she's doing for him must be for a reason. Maybe this was explained but does anybody remember when Kate and the other two were first kidnapped and she woke up with a bandage that showed that made it look like they had drawn blood? That was before she slept with Sawyer.

I dont actually think that moms are being villified... I mean the dads are all pretty messed up too. Jack's alcoholic dad, Sun's evil mobster or w/e dad etc... I do however agree that the whole women get pregnant and die thing is annoying. Actually come to think of it if a woman even thinks about having sex on the island she's pretty much doomed (Shannon had sex and then died, Libby started getting romantic with Hurley then died, Ana Lucia hooks up with Sawyer and dies, now Sun is going to die for having sex and getting pregnant?). Perhaps the writers have some issues with women.

There are plenty of bad dads in the show, but my thing is, where is Locke's mother in all that? Oh, right, she lied to Locke to assist his dad with a con. I think whether good or bad, the father-child relationships are simply more important and much more focused-on in the show. And in general there aren't many strong mother characters — besides Claire. I know Hurley's mom is not evil or comatose, but she is insignificant, especially in comparison to his relationship with his dad (Cheech). The only other positive example I can think of is Ana Lucia's mom who was a police chief.

One argument against the mother-villifying theory: Locke's father.

I think that The Others made sure the plane remains were found and made it look like there were no survivors. I don't know how I feel about Juliette yet. I don't like her, but I don't think she's bad either.

I thought it was a good episode! I'm was so happy for Sun that it is Jin's baby...but sad too. How did Mikhail guy live through being fryed? No way! And when Desmond said that he would shoot the flare gun at him, he said "Well, I've already died once" Can't wait to see what happens with Naomi and the other flight 815.

I love Sun!!!! I also really like her hair. Mikhail seriously came out of nowhere- I was like :jawdrop: didnt he fry alive???? Im really interested to see where the flight 815 thing is going to go. Im totally with you on the whole women die but men are stronger thing. But Im really curious as to why it is like this too

Buzz - I loved me some Sun last night! She stood up to two faced (or maybe three) Juliet and would not take her nondescript BS. And I think that Kate and Sawyer left in cages like animals in "heat" is not a coincidence. :)

Buzz- I TOTALLY thought the same thing about the superman sperm & cursed women! WTF?! I was thinking that the Others (or the people who control them) staged a crash site. Obviously some of the Losties were "destined" to wind up on the island...

OMG, Buzz, I thought of Dirty Dancing too! :rotfl: I heart Sun. As a matter of fact, I think I have a little girl crush on her. She was just so breathtakingly beautiful in all her flashbacks.
