Lost Rundown: Episode 3, "The Economist"

Last night's episode of Lost left me reeling for many reasons. While we did get to see another member of the elusive Oceanic 6, the episode raised many new questions, and as usual, provided few answers. That said, it was definitely one of the more suspenseful episodes we've seen and had enough twists and turns to keep me entertained for an hour.

For an awesome full plot rundown of the episode, check out WhiplashGirlchild's recap. For some of my thoughts and to share your own (spoilers ahead),

  • Right off the bat, something tells me that the bracelet Sayid stole from Naomi is going to come back to haunt us. The bracelet reads "N, I'll always be with you, R.G." I kinda wish we could just forget about the characters who have already died since we've got so many living ones to follow, but oh well.
  • Future Sayid is all cleaned up, preppy, and enjoying a country club lifestyle as a member of the Oceanic 6. Based on his golf partner's reaction, Sayid has created a reputation for himself as one of the survivors. Obviously we can't be fooled by his blow-dried hair and fancy threats — Sayid is still just as intense and unafraid of violence as ever, showcased by how quickly he shoots his golfing buddy dead.
  • New Sayid is quite the smooth talker, and isn't showing any signs of still being in love with Nadia as he gets involved with Elsa. Sad, I kind of miss when Sayid was the torturer/hopeless romantic.
  • Everyone seems to disagree with Locke, so why don't they just team up against him? I'm especially surprised that nobody has accidentally killed someone else in the heat of passion yet. Namely Ben — Sawyer never seemed to have a problem taking matters into his own hands before.
  • Dan conducts an experiment on the island, only adding to the mystery of the space/time continuum. Overall, this subplot paled in comparison to everything else that went down.
  • It's kind of a letdown to see Sayid fall victim to Locke's trap. Especially since Ben pretty much owns Sayid's soul from here on out.
  • Favorite line of the episode goes to Hurley: "I saw you snap that guys neck with the break dancing thing you do with your legs . . . I think I'll hang back here." Also, that scene from last season was awesome.
  • Aww, the scene where Sawyer wants Kate to stay with him on the island is pretty sweet, although it's hard to believe that Sawyer is ready to settle down with Kate and raise island babies and live happily ever after. Plus, we know Kate is going to get off the island so clearly Sawyer's powers of persuasion are going to fail eventually.

  • Speaking of which, does anyone else think that maybe Kate isn't one of the Oceanic 6? Seems unlikely that she wouldn't have to go to jail, considering she was on the run for years before the plane crash. I wonder if she finds another way to get off the island without being as high profile as the Oceanic 6.
  • Sayid and Elsa's romantic moment gets interrupted pretty quickly when they whip out their guns and start shooting each other. Sayid gets away with the gunshot, only to be stitched up by his new boss — ta da! It's Ben, who is now some kind of doctor?
  • So, Sayid is working for Ben, but is Ben still running things back on the island? Ben says that Sayid has to "protect his friends," but are those his friends on the island or the ones who were rescued? Who else is Ben asking Sayid to kill? And does he have any contact with the other members of the Oceanic 6? The fact that Sayid still can't figure out a way to outsmart Ben is kind of ominous for the future.

So what did you think of last night's episode? Were you totally confused? Loving all the action? Are you still pulling for Jack and Kate even though it looks like things between Kate and Sawyer get hot and heavy next week? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

Ah I had been waiting for this post last week but i had to leave before it came up! Best ep so far of the season and as always lost seems to answer questions by asking bigger ones! I think that we all knew that when Ben said "we're the good guys" back in season 2, it was almost too ridiculous to be true but it had to be somehow, as the big twist. So the Boaties are actually bad, and Ben is "good" so the Losties now need to fight the boaties to protect the other losties still on the island. Ben must be black mailing Sayid to get him to do this. Also, as a huge Jack/Kate fan, my heart broke a little when Jack thought Kate chose to stay, can't wait until he finds out she is a prisoner! Best line of the night: Hurley "Oh great, the boat brought us another Sawyer"

Wait, when was Sayid ever in love with Nadia? I'm confused about that part of the recap.

The coordinates that Dan gave the pilot was the same ones that Ben gave Michael when he was leaving on the boat. I think that Michael is Ben's man on the boat. I also think that Sayid looked fine in that tux!!!!

Yes Sayid! I have been watching Season 1 on, and wish I was Shannon back then..he is hot. Even hotter in this week's episode. I'm all for a Sayid/Jack/Sawyer poll!

Did anyone else notice how sexy Sayid was in this episode? WOW! He really blew me away with I think he is by far the sexy guy on the island. But the chemistry between Kate and Sawyer was pretty hot too. I would kill to be in her spot. Except I would add in Sayid! lol

This episode was the strongest of the new season, in my opinion! Loved the freakiness of the Weird Sciencey space-time continuum along with the Veronic Mars-ish bracelet business. Sterling Silver Secret Society-loves it. I also totally agree that I thought it was going to be Christian Shephard in the room, and to be honest, I thought that would have been a teeny bit cooler. As for the Oceanic Six, I want the last two to be Sun and Jin because I love them and they are barely on these new episodes, wtf? Lastly, can I just secretly confess that one of the things that keeps me hooked to LOST is I just CANNOT decide who is hotter: Sayid or Sawyer? Buzz, any chance we can take a poll on this? I think some peer pressure might be of use here....

I am so glad we got a Sayid episode! We just don't see enough of him, in my opinion. And in the future, all clean and well-coiffed in a tuxedo...oh my. Can every episode be a Sayid flash-forward, please? I kept thinking during this ep how much Lost is reminding me of the presidential campaign. Kate: "I'm choosing Jack because I believe he can get us off this island." Sawyer: "Locke is the only one that has a good plan that will ensure we keep surviving." I don't know, I just felt like they were arguing over who the best candidate was to lead the island! Maybe it's just me!

LOL Radarkitty!! I would LOVE to be in Kate's position too! But personally I'd have to go with Sawyer. He's cute cute CUTE!!! I wanna play house with him!

Tiabia, I totally agree, the funniest line to me was when Hurley said "great they sent another Sawyer" LOL! I too knew it was Ben as soon as he started talking. It seems like they were trying to mask it a little to shock you when you saw him but I knew by his voice and my hubby was like, yeah that's Ben. And that was Jack's father/ghost in Jacob's cabin, right? Buzz, what about Shannon, didn't Sayid love her last after Nadia?? ;)

And so the Oceanic 6 would be Jack, Kate, Sayid, Hurley, Claire and Aaron then? Because Desmond's vision said that Claire and Aaron take a helicopter off the island.

Hotstuff I heard Christian Shepherd too! That was the first voice in the room and then the camera panned to Ben! And why was Desmond on the beach alone?

hotstuff- it was ben's voice. i am sure of that. i think he was just speaking a bit deeper and they were trying to make it less likely to guess beofre they reveal.

The voice was Ben's. My fiance said Sayid's boss was Ben right when we found out Ben was pursuing Elsa. Then we heard the voice and knew for sure.

I missed some of the show last night...but at the end of last season Kate and Jack were back at home in one of the flash forwards... remember they were close to an airport and he kept telling her they have to go back. Kate is definitely part of the oceanic 6, so far we have 4, atleast that i know of. :)

I watched it again and it almost seems as if it was 3 people not 2 in the room. The deeper voice (possibly Christians) was also having almost a different conversation. Then when it cut to Ben's voice he was asking 'why are you crying'. I don't think they would go to the lenght of tweaking Ben's voice just to trick us, it's too cheesy for Lost. I'm gonna go back later and listen to the voice of whoever Sayid was talking to on his cell phone and see if it sounds like Christian.

Hmmm...When the boss was talking to Sayid the first thing I did was scream out "OMG! His boss is BEN!" The voice just like Ben to me from the get go.

The voice wasn't Ben's? The second I heard that voice I thought it was Ben's, just sounded a little deeper at first (which I thought they were doing to try to fool us). I'll have to check that part again tonight... Personally, I think Jack's dad is dead and gone. I think the only reason he was in Jacob's cabin was because "Jacob" is a ghost or spirit or something that embodies dead people, ie Jack's Dad, Boone, and Eko's brother (all people who are dead, their bodies are on the island, and who have reappeared after their death). And Walt, which is why I think Walt's dead. Just my theory, feel free to debunk it :-P
