If You Watch the Chilling Trailer For Ma, Octavia Spencer Will Be in Your Nightmares Tonight

Feb 16 2019 - 8:30am

Oscar winner Octavia Spencer [1] is taking a break from prestige dramas like The Shape of Water and Hidden Figures to haunt your nightmares as her latest character, "Ma."

In the upcoming Blumhouse horror film [2], which is aptly titled Ma and directed by The Help's Tate Taylor, Spencer plays Sue Ann, a loner who longs for companionship in her small Ohio town. She gets the chance to make new friends, however, when a teenager new to the area, Maggie (Glass actress Diana Silvers), asks Sue Ann to buy alcohol for her and a group of other teens. Despite their age gap, Sue Ann — who instructs Maggie and her friends to call her "Ma" — leaps at the opportunity to be social and invites the group back to party in the basement of her home.

Of course, because this is a thriller, this isn't a touching story about a kindhearted group of teenagers bringing a lonely older woman out of her shell. Instead, Ma introduces a series of rules that get more and more sinister: someone has to stay sober, no one's allowed to curse, and never go upstairs. Will the kids survive the night? Well, as the tagline for Ma teases, "Everybody's welcome at Ma's, but good luck getting home safe."

The film also stars Juliette Lewis, Luke Evans, and Missi Pyle and is set to hit theaters on May 31. Watch the trailer above!
