New music from Macklemore & Ryan Lewis has hit the airwaves once again! As usual, their latest song is less of a simple jam to sing along to and more of a think piece. The nine-minute track, "White Privilege II," is a follow-up to the one Macklemore penned in 2005 [1], and the lyrics are a no-holds-barred response to the current state of race relations in our country, particularly the Black Lives Matter movement [2]. He questions his validity as a supporter of the group, rapping, "OK, I'm saying that they're chanting out, 'Black lives matter,' but I don't say it back / Is it OK for me to say? I don't know, so I watch and stand in front of a line of police that look the same as me."
He also doesn't shy away from the comparisons he regularly receives to Elvis Presley, Miley Cyrus [3], and Iggy Azalea — white artists who many criticize for making money off of black culture. "You've exploited and stolen the music, the moment," the new dad [4] raps in one of the earlier verses. "The magic, the passion, the fashion, you toy with / The culture was never yours to make better / You're Miley, you're Elvis, you're Iggy Azalea / Fake and so plastic, you've heisted the magic." With meaningful lyrics and an addictive hook courtesy of Jamila Woods, "White Privilege II" has Macklemore & Ryan Lewis written all over it. Listen to it above, or download it for free on iTunes [5].
