Mark Hamill Has Some Thoughts About The Last Jedi's Ending: "He's Not My Luke Skywalker"

Since the premiere of Star Wars: The Last Jedi [1] on Dec. 15, the reaction from passionate fans has been split. Despite featuring an interesting relationship between Rey and Kylo Ren [2], and the fact it's the most feminist [3] and diverse entry [4] into the franchise, Luke Skywalker's journey in the movie has been pretty divisive. So much so that a pretty savage petition to remove The Last Jedi from the official canon [5] has been signed by over 46,000 people. If you're one of them, there's someone out there who might agree with your choice: Mark Hamill.

The actor, who originated the role of Luke in 1977's A New Hope, revealed in a recent interview clip [6] that he's not the biggest fan of how the iconic Jedi's story wraps up [7]. Apparently it's something he and director Rian Johnson could never agree on and Hamill considers The Last Jedi's take on the character "not my Luke Skywalker."

"I said to Rian, I said 'Jedis don't give up'," he explained. "I mean even if he had a problem, maybe take a year to try and regroup . . . but if he made a mistake he would try and right that wrong."

Still, Hamill was quick to note that he supports Johnson every step of the way, even if they had a fundamental disagreement about Luke: "I still haven't accepted it completely, but it's only a movie. I hope people like it, I hope they don't get upset, and I came to really believe that Rian was the exact man that they needed for this job."
