Movie Preview: Sugar

I'm intrigued by the trailer for this movie Sugar — and not just because it's also the name of the company where I happen to work (though I think that's a nice coincidence). One of the best-received films of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, Sugar was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize there and went on to nab an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Screenplay. Reviews for the film have been overwhelmingly positive, with praise surfacing like Variety calling the film "sympathetic, genial and exceedingly wholesome," and Hollywood Reporter declaring that "the immigrant experience has been seen many times on film before but rarely with the authenticity, wit and intelligence of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's Sugar."

Judging from the trailer alone, the film appears to be worthy of such praise. The story follows baseball star Miguel "Sugar" Santos, who is recruited from the Dominican Republic to play in the US minor leagues. The movie will get a limited run in theaters starting April 3. To watch the rather beautiful trailer,

I was excited to see this trailer when I went to see Slumdog Millionaire. It looks good, and I liked Half Nelson. Plus love a good baseball movie.

The trailer’s great, and it makes Sugar look more like a conventional baseball movie than it is. Trust me, I saw it at Sundance (sold out screenings) and the Toronto film festival last year. Twists and surprises you don’t see coming – much like Half Nelson. Great acting from new talent Algenis Perez Soto, cast directly from a baseball field in the Dominican Republic. I’ll see anything by Fleck & Boden too. After all, they directed Ryan Gosling to his first Best Actor Oscar nomination based on their screenplay of Half Nelson – not bad for their *first* feature.

AND the trailer totally reminds me of that great TV show everybody should be watching – Friday Night Lights :)

Would watch anything by the people responsible for Half Nelson, one of my all-time favorite movies. This looks really great.

I don't know, it seems like I've already seen this movie. It looks okay, but I'm turned off by the fact that it's from thw writers of Half-Nelson - that movie was insanely stupid and boring...
