17 of 2019's Most Exciting Movies Are Sequels, Spinoffs, or Reboots

We're about to be very happy in 2019 when our favorite film franchises make some new additions to the pantheon. From kids' movies to horror to superheroes to the most beloved space opera of all time, there's a little something for everyone this coming year. While Star Wars: Episode IX is definitely generating the most buzz, we'd be lying if we said Tom Hanks and Tim Allen's recent comments about crying while recording the final scene for Toy Story 4 don't have us circling June 21 on the calendar.

Glass

Nearly 20 years after the journey began, M. Night Shyamalan took us back into the world of Mr. Glass (Samuel L. Jackson) and David Dunn (Bruce Willis). This is the third film in the Unbreakable trilogy, picking up after the events of 2017's Split starring James McAvoy and Anya Taylor-Joy. Glass also added Sarah Paulson as a psychiatrist who treats patients convinced they are superhuman.

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part

Five years after the first film, Finn's younger sister has now invaded Bricksburg with her Duplo blocks, and all heck has broken loose. All your favorite Lego people are back: Chris Pratt as Emmet Brickowski, Elizabeth Banks as Lucy, Will Arnett as Batman, and Alison Brie as Princess Unikitty, with the additions of Tiffany Haddish as Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi and Stephanie Beatriz as Sweet Mayhem.

This sequel to the 2017 surprise hit Happy Death Day sees Theresa "Tree" Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) reentering the time loop to figure out why she ever ended up there in the first place. Once there, she must deal with Lori (Ruby Modine), who is hellbent on revenge.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

This 3D animated film is the third and final installment in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise. In this last film, Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and Toothless must leave the only home they've ever known to travel to a hidden world they thought only existed in myth. There, they must fight to save their home. Cate Blanchett, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, and Jonah Hill costar.

Avengers: Endgame

This is the 22nd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, capping off the third phase and bringing the Avengers: Infinity War saga to a close before phase four kicks off later this year with Spider-Man: Far from Home. In this latest film, the remaining Avengers must work together to reverse the actions of Thanos, which left half of all life in the universe dead.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

This sequel to the 2014 film Godzilla sees Sally Hawkins, Ken Watanabe, and David Strathairn reprise their roles of scientists and military commanders as the Earth faces a new threat of superspecies monsters, including the title character but also Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, and Millie Bobby Brown also star.

John Wick: Chapter 3

After an out-of-nowhere hit in 2014 and a roller coaster sequel in 2017, Keanu Reeves is back for the third installment that sees the title character on the run after killing a High Table member inside the Continental. There's a $14 million contract out on his life as he fights his way out of New York City. Halle Berry joins in the fun this time around as an assassin, while Ian McShane plays the owner of the Continental Hotel, and Laurence Fishburne stars as a crime lord known as the Bowery King.

The Secret Life of Pets 2

This followup to the 2016 hit sees Patton Oswalt taking over as the voice of Jack Russell Terrier Max, who was voiced by comedian Louis C.K. in the original. This time around, our intrepid hero pets Max, Duke (Eric Stonestreet), Snowball (Kevin Hart), Chloe (Lake Bell), Buddy (Hannibal Buress), and Pops (Dana Carvey) are joined by some new pets voiced by Tiffany Haddish, Nick Kroll, Pete Holmes, and Harrison Ford.

Men in Black: International

This sci-fi comedy is more of a spinoff than direct sequel to the Will Smith-Tommy Lee Jones films, taking the action to the Men in Black's UK branch. Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson star as the alien-fighting duo, with Liam Neeson appearing as the head of their branch. Emma Thompson also appears, reprising her role of Agent O from Men in Black 3.

Toy Story 4

Details are scarce so far about the exact plot, but we do know Veep star Tony Hale, Keanu Reeves, and comedy duo Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele are joining the voice cast. We also know the ending is going to hit you right in the heartstrings, so pack the tissues.

Two years after the events of The Fate of the Furious, federal agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) teams up with former British Special Forces assassin Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) to stop an international terrorist. Idris Elba also stars in this sequel/spinoff to the Fast & the Furious franchise.

After the It remake took horror fans by storm in 2017, hold onto your hats for the sequel, because it is apparently going to be even scarier than its predecessor. Not only can the writers up the ante because they're now using adult actors instead of kids, but there is also a Pennywise origin story that star Bill Skarsgard called "really, really disturbing" on Variety's Playback podcast.

Downton Abbey

This British hit ran for six seasons on ITV and PBS, and now, three years after it went off the air, fans are getting a followup film. Everyone involved is keeping mum on plot details, though the trailers have teased a royal visit from King George V and Queen Mary. Stars Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael, Maggie Smith, Joanne Froggatt, Jim Carter, Allen Leech, and many more are set to reprise their roles from he show. Joining them are newcomers Imelda Staunton, Simon Jones, Geraldine James, Tuppence Middleton, and Max Brown. The posters for the film also tease something quite sophisticated.

Zombieland: Double Tap

This followup to the surprise 2009 horror comedy sees Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin reprise their roles as survivors of the zombie apocalypse. It has been years since the events of the first film, and this time, the survivors must deal with evolved zombies and fellow survivors who may not see eye to eye with our heroes.

Frozen 2

It isn't just the kiddos who are excited about this sequel to the animated smash hit that launched a thousand renditions of "Let It Go." In the new film, Elsa (Idina Menzel), Anna (Kristen Bell), and their friends embark on a new journey outside their homeland of Arendelle. Joining the returning cast members are newcomers Evan Rachel Wood and Sterling K. Brown.

This just may be the most anticipated film of 2019, and it doesn't even come out until late December.
