18 Movies We Can't Wait to See This Year

Now that the 2016 has arrived, we're looking ahead to the year's most exciting movies. It should come as no surprise that plenty of sequels (like Captain America: Civil War) and reboots (like Ghostbusters) are on the way, but there are also some book adaptations that we can't wait to see. Out of 2016's gigantic selection, here are the 18 movies we are most looking forward to seeing in the upcoming year.

Deadpool
Marvel

Deadpool

There's a reason that excitement for Deadpool is extending beyond Marvel fanboys. The film has been years in the making, and star Ryan Reynolds is already nailing the part of the foul-mouthed antihero. Plus, need I remind you that he looks just as good out of the mask as he does in it?

When it opens: Feb. 12

Zoolander 2
Paramount Pictures

Zoolander 2

We would be stoked about this long-awaited sequel even without the A-list cast and ridiculous publicity stunts. Ben Stiller is returning as the titular male model, along wtih Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell, and newcomers Kristen Wiig and Penélope Cruz. Bring on the Blue Steel!

When it opens: Feb. 12

The Divergent Series: Allegiant
Lionsgate

The Divergent Series: Allegiant

The final Divergent book has been split into two movies, but that hasn't dampened our excitement! New faces are set to appear in the first of the pair of movies, and the trailer has already blown us away. And all right, admittedly we're really excited to see the ever-so-sexy Four again.

When it opens: March 18

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
Warner Bros.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

We've been hearing about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice for so long that it's actually hard to believe we haven't seen the movie yet. We do have pictures of stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, and Jesse Eisenberg, as well as plenty of trailers. This showdown is poised to be epic.

When it opens: March 25

The Jungle Book
Disney

The Jungle Book

Whenever news breaks that one of your favorite childhood movies is getting a reboot, there's usually an initial knee-jerk reaction that it's a travesty. However, in the case of The Jungle Book, we're willing to overlook the injustice. Why? Because the trailer is drop-dead gorgeous and the pictures tease a lush new take on Mowgli's tale.

When it opens: April 15

Captain America: Civil War
Marvel

Captain America: Civil War

As soon as Martin Freeman joined the cast of Captain America's third stand-alone movie, we knew were in for a good time. This time, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) is pitted against Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) in a battle leading up to the Infinity War films. Sure, it's just another chapter in Marvel's gigantic saga, but the trailer looks super cool.

When it opens: May 6

X-Men: Apocalypse
20th Century Studios

X-Men: Apocalypse

X-Men: Apocalypse looks like the franchise's darkest installment yet, and we're fully into it. The trailer shows off the impressive cast, including returning cast members Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender, plus new ones like Sophie Turner. Things are about to get crazy for our favorite mutants!

When it opens: May 27

Finding Dory
Disney

Finding Dory

Finding Nemo is heartbreaking and hilarious, due in large part to Dory (Ellen DeGeneres). The character is getting a stand-alone movie 12 years after the release of the original, and the trailer has already caught us — hook, line, and sinker.

Independence Day: Resurgence

Will Smith may not be appearing in the sequel to his 1996 blockbuster, but we'll take Liam Hemsworth as a consolation prize any day. The strapping star is taking on leading man duties, opposite returning stars Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, and Vivica A. Fox. We haven't seen much of the film, aside from some pictures from the set, but we really don't need an excuse to get excited to see Hemsworth fight aliens.

When it opens: June 24

Ghostbusters

Ghostbusters

You'd have to be a complete Scrooge not to be excited (or at the very least, curious) about Paul Feig's Ghostbusters reboot. Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones are donning the jumpsuits for the female-led film, which also features an adorable Chris Hemsworth.

When it opens: July 15

Untitled Bourne Sequel

The world breathed in a collective gasp in September when producer Frank Marshall tweeted a picture of Matt Damon on the set of the fifth Jason Bourne movie. He's reprising his role as Jason Bourne alongside Tommy Lee Jones, Alicia Vikander, and returning star Julia Stiles. We're not sure what he's doing to get that bod, but let's just hope the shirt stays off in a few scenes.

When it opens: July 29

Suicide Squad
Warner Bros.

Suicide Squad

Thanks to the set pictures and the creepy teaser, Suicide Squad is a full-on phenomenon, despite the fact that the movie is months away from being released. The all-star cast includes Will Smith and Margot Robbie, but let's get real: it's all about Jared Leto as The Joker.

When it opens: Aug. 5

Bridget Jones's Baby

Bridget Jones's Baby

Everything we know about the third Bridget Jones movie is more than enough for us to buy an advance ticket. Patrick Dempsey is joining Reneé Zellweger and Colin Firth in the sequel, and we already have a glimpse at the set! Let's just hope this movie includes yet another spontaneous musical moment.

When it opens: Sept. 16

Gambit

Channing Tatum is one of the latest A-listers to sign up to portray a comic book character. We'll get his stand-alone movie in October, but rumor has it that he'll turn up first in X-Men: Apocalypse. We haven't seen anything from the movie yet, but we do know that Gambit is a Louisiana-born mutant with an ability to manipulate energy.

The Girl on the Train

The Girl on the Train

If you're not already on board for The Girl on the Train, allow us to convince you. The book is funny, mysterious, and basically this year's Gone Girl. The fact that Emily Blunt and Justin Theroux are in the cast of the movie is just a wonderful bonus. We've only been studying every single set picture.

When it opens: Oct. 7

Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange

It's actually kind of shocking that with his legion of fans, Benedict Cumberbatch has managed not to be in a Marvel movie yet. Well, that's all about to change! He's playing the titular Doctor Strange in the character's upcoming stand-alone movie, which is currently in production. There are actually a bunch of Marvel newbies in the cast, like Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton, and Hannibal's Mads Mikkelsen.

When it opens: Nov. 4

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Warner Bros.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Any Harry Potter fans who know their quaffle from their snitch has to be pumped about this upcoming prequel. Eddie Redmayne is starring as Newt Scamander in the film, which will give us a whole new look at the wizarding world created by J.K. Rowling. Not sufficiently excited? These details should do the trick.

When it opens: Nov. 18

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Disney

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

If you're counting down the hours until you get to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens, then you have to be excited about the next Star Wars movie, Rogue One. This one, starring Felicity Jones, is billed as more of an spinoff than a sequel, making it possibly even more mysterious than The Force Awakens.
