Music Suggestions For an 8-Year-Old Girl

Do You Have Music Suggestions For a Cool 8-Year-Old Girl?

The following question was asked by Elka Karl, who posted it in the Music Review group.

My little sister Grace has been expressing interest in music, according to my mom, and I thought it would be fun to download a bunch of great music from iTunes and make her a mix. My mom says she's been talking about Taylor Swift, which is fine (I've found myself humming along to Taylor Swift in the car sometimes, I admit it). But there are so many great female musicians out there that I'd love to expose her to. She lives in the boonies and has very little exposure to good popular music . . .

I'd love to find music for her that:
1. Has no swearing and minimal references to substance use.
2. No overt getting busy references, please.
3. Is made by a woman.

To see the artists Elka already has on her list and make suggestions, just keep reading.

Here's what I've been adding to my list thus far:

Bat For Lashes
Rachel Sage
Erykah Badu
Brandi Carlile
Smoosh (girls she can look up to, yay!)
Katie Armiger
Tegan and Sara
India Arie
Jill Scott
St. Vincent
Willow Smith (I have to put "Whip My Hair" on, I think)
And of course, some Taylor Swift

I would love other song and artist suggestions! Thanks so much.

Patty Griffin has some great songs. There's also band called Saving Jane that has some good girl-power songs.

Oh also Kimya Dawson and Antsy Pants - Tree Hugger - from the Juno sountrack. It's a fun song!

Jewel's Pieces of You album was my first non-Disney CD. Hoku - Perfect Day Ingrid Michaelson - Be OK Joss Stone - Super Duper Love Anna Nalick - Forever Love (Digame) Colbie Caillat - Bubbly Pat Benetar - Love is a Battlefield Paula Abdul - Straight Up Pretty much anything by Norah Jones If you want to expose her to different genres of music, Solas is a great Irish group with a female lead singer - they do a lot of traditional Irish music. Frou Frou - Holding Out for a Hero Fredo Starr feat. Jill Scott - True Colors Diana Krall - Let's Fall In Love

definitely carrie underwood! Also marie digby is good. If she is into the disney channel she might like having some Selena Gomez in there, apparently the only good girl left on the channel!

Since you guys mentioned Kelly, Carrie Underwood has some great kid-friendly songs. Maybe you could suggest her? Ingrid Michaelson makes great songs. Maybe you could get some of her songs like The Way I Am or Everybody.

My 11 year old once heard me listening to Corinne Bailey Rae and loved it! (my sis is also a big Taylor fan)

Anything from Alison Sudol of A Fine Frenzy. Their first album, One Cell in the Sea, is heavenly and almost feels like a children's book set to music at times.

Here's a kid-friendly playlist that a lot of kids enjoy for its upbeat quality. It's adult-friendly too, not Kidz Bop stuff. 1. Apples In Stereo- "Energy" 2. Cornershop- "The Roll of Characteristics (History in the Making)" 3. Dandy Warhols- "Bohemian Like You" 4. Everclear- "AM Radio" 5. Jackson 5- "I Want You Back" (and/or "ABC") 6. Len- "Steal My Sunshine" 7. Oranger- "Mr. Sandman" (a modern rock version of the classic) 8. Passion Pit- "The Reeling" 9. Vokab Company- "So Bright" I agree with the 60s girl group suggestions. And along those lines, maybe some Joss Stone? Maybe some 80s stuff like New Edition (they always remind me of the 80s version of Jackson 5).

Oh, and I absolutely support Annie's suggestion of Motown singers or any "girl groups" from the 60s. The Ronettes, Supremes, Marvelettes, Shangri-las, Vandellas...they all made very great music that's easy for any girl to dance and sing along to. Ok, I'm off to go download a boatload of music now.

I'd totally go the classic rock and '80s route. Give her a little rock history! It's not hard to find "clean" songs by The Pretenders, Joan Jett, the Go Gos, Joni Mitchell, Siouxie Sioux, Janis Joplin, the Bangles, Pat Benatar, Blondie...(I could totally keep going).

Regina Spektor has some good stuff and maybe Kelly Clarkson?

Kaki King, maybe Marnie Stern? Lali Puna. Gossip, YYYs. Joanna Newsom, though that might be a little daring for an 8-year-old. Patsy Cline, Nina Simone, ye-ye girls like Chantal Goya and France Gall, and then tons of Motown singers. Maybe some Le Tigre, too. Cat Power. Casual Dots. Velocity Girl. Sleater-Kinney. HEAVENLY! Oh man, I'd have loved Heavenly when I was 8. You'd have to turn these into a mix because the full records have content you're trying to avoid, but individual songs might work.
