HBO released another teaser for The New Pope, and we're not sure if we've been blessed or cursed. The follow-up to the Jude Law-led series The Young Pope [1] follows Law's Lenny Belardo — aka Pope Pius XIII — who is ending his time as pope after falling into a coma. Taking over for the young Lenny is John Malkovich's Pope John Paul III [2], who calmly declares, "I'm irresponsible. I'm indolent. I'm pompous. I'm conceited." Oh, yes, we're in for a sinfully good storyline.
Much of the upcoming nine-episode season is still a mystery, but showrunner Paolo Sorrentino has teased that he's still exploring "the world of the modern papacy." [3] Silvio Orlando will return as Cardinal Angelo Voiello, with Sharon Stone and Marilyn Manson [4] joining in supporting roles. This season is going to be ridiculously sacrilegious [5], and we can't wait for the memes when it arrives in January 2020!
