Here's Your First Peek at Fall's New TV Shows!
This is a hugely exciting time for TV addicts: shows have been canceled and renewed left and right, and networks are unveiling their plans for the Fall. Fox, ABC, CBS, NBC, and The CW have already made some big announcements about the new shows they've greenlit for the 2017 to 2018 season, and we can't wait to sink our teeth into them. Lucy Hale, Adam Scott, Emily VanCamp, and more stars are returning to primetime! See what shows you'll be obsessed with come Fall.
9JKL
Network: CBS
After starring for years on Royal Pains, Mark Feuerstein is moving to CBS. More specifically, he's moving into apartment 9JKL. He plays a newly unemployed actor who moves into a place sandwiched between his parents and his brother. It's like Everybody Loves Raymond, only with more melon, apparently.
Premiere date: Oct. 2
Me, Myself & I
Network: CBS
Jack Dylan Grazer, Bobby Moynihan, and John Larroquette play fictional inventor Alex Riley at various stages of his life. This comedy toggles back and forth between young Alex, 40-year-old Alex, and older Alex, giving us a full picture of one man's life. It sounds a little cheesy, but the trailer is one of the more promising ones of the Fall season.
Premiere date: Sept. 25
Young Sheldon
Network: CBS
Oh, so you love Sheldon Cooper? Do you want to know more about Sheldon Cooper? Possibly how he grew up? This prequel takes place in 1989 and stars Iain Armitage (Big Little Lies) as 9-year-old Sheldon. Fun fact: Zoe Perry plays Sheldon's mom. Perry's real-life mother is Laurie Metcalf, who played grown Sheldon's mom in The Big Bang Theory.
Premiere date: Sept. 25
Wisdom of the Crowd
Network: CBS
Jeremy Piven and Monica Potter star in this drama about a tech genius who creates a real-time, crowdsourced, crime-solving website to help get to the bottom of his daughter's murder. The premise is compelling and relevant, and I have high hopes!
Premiere date: Oct. 1
S.W.A.T.
Network: CBS
Former Criminal Minds star Shemar Moore is moving over to star in this TV adaptation of the 2003 thriller. Judging by the trailer, the show isn't shying away from exploring racial dynamics between law enforcement and urban communities, which should make this more interesting than the run-of-the-mill cop show.
Premiere date: Nov. 2
SEAL Team
Network: CBS Before you shed too many tears over the end of Bones, check out David Boreanaz in SEAL Team. You'll recognize a few other TV vets, like Max Thieriot (Bates Motel) and Jessica Paré (Mad Men), in the trailer!
Premiere date: Sept. 27
For the People
Network: ABC
Who's ready for a new Shonda Rhimes show? Everyone? Great. This legal drama centers on a team of lawyers working both defense and prosecution in New York's Southern District (aka "The Mother Court"). Hope Davis, Ben Rappaport, and Anna Deavere Smith star.
Premiere date: Midseason
The Mayor
Network: ABC
What happens when a local rapper (Brandon Micheal Hall) campaigns for mayor as a publicity stunt . . . then wins? This comedy follows said rapper as he embarks on a political journey that he never really wanted. Lea Michele and Yvette Nicole Brown costar!
Premiere date: Oct. 3
Kevin (Probably) Saves the World
Network: ABC
Primetime vet Jason Ritter (Parenthood) plays Kevin, a guy who is far from sainthood. When a woman (Cristela Alonzo) shows up in his life and tells him he needs to find 35 "righteous" humans to save the world, he's pretty sure she has the wrong guy. Because this is a comedy, she definitely has the right guy.
Premiere date: Oct. 3
Deception
Network: ABC
Thought they ran out of professionally unique characters to help the police? THINK AGAIN. This drama stars Jack Cutmore-Scott as a magician hired to assist the FBI with investigations. Let's just hope ABC doesn't pull a "now you see it, now you don't" and cancel the show after a month.
Premiere date: Midseason
Splitting Up Together
Network: ABC
If you've been rooting for Jenna Fischer to find a new home since The Office ended, tune in for this comedy. She stars as one half of a couple (Oliver Hudson is the other half) whose marriage gets better because of their divorce.
Premiere date: Midseason
Ten Days in the Valley
Network: ABC
Kyra Sedgwick returns to TV as the producer of a hit crime series whose daughter disappears. Secrets unfold around her as she attempts to find her missing child, and nothing is as it seems. Dun, dun, dun.
Premiere date: Oct. 1
The Good Doctor
Network: ABC
Freddie Highmore is moving from the Bates Motel to the hospital! The young actor is playing an autistic genius who takes on a residency and finds that he still has to convince everyone around him that he's capable of solving even the toughest medical cases. It looks pretty good, but he'll always be Norman Bates to me.
Premiere date: Sept. 25
The Crossing
Network: ABC
Forty-seven survivors wash up on the shore of a small fishing town claiming to be from the future. Steve Zahn plays a sheriff who is trying to figure out whether they're telling the truth about the war that they're fleeing from, even though that war doesn't occur for another century.
Premiere date: Midseason
Alex, Inc.
Network: ABC
Zach Braff is back! Inspired by the podcast StartUp, Braff plays a character based on Alex Blumberg, a seasoned NPR reporter who left to start his own podcast company. If you listen to season one of the StartUp, it's especially interesting to see Gimlet's story come to life!
Premiere date: Midseason
The Resident
Network: Fox
Emily VanCamp (Revenge) is returning to primetime for another hour-long drama. Rather than the Hamptons, she'll be running around a hospital as a senior resident who is in charge of training a young doctor (Manish Dayal). Gilmore Girls vet Matt Czuchry is also starring in the medical series.
Premiere date: Midseason
The Gifted
Network: Fox
This thriller is about a couple (Stephen Moyer and Amy Acker) who discover that their children have mutant powers. Bryan Singer, who directed the pilot, is the executive producer, and there are a ton of X-Men alums behind the scenes!
Premiere date: Oct. 2
Ghosted
Network: Fox
Adam Scott and Craig Robinson are heading up this spoof on The X-Files. Scott is playing a "true believer," while Robinson is the skeptic. Given that Ghosted and the returning X-Files reboot are both on Fox, would it be too much to ask for a crossover episode?
Premiere date: Oct. 1
L.A. to Vegas
Network: Fox
Meanwhile, Fox also ordered this 30-minute comedy starring Dylan McDermott and Ed Weeks (The Mindy Project). It sounds superspecific, taking place solely on a Friday night flight from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, then the Sunday night return trip.
Premiere date: Midseason
Orville
Network: Fox
Seth MacFarlane is starring (like actually in person, not just his voice) in this Star Trek parody. Jon Favreau directed the pilot and is serving as an executive producer on the series, which looks pretty high-tech for a primetime series, even a sci-fi one.
Premiere date: Sept. 10
The Brave
Network: NBC
Under the Dome's Mike Vogel is the leading man in this military drama, which features a Special Ops team tasked with protecting the U.S. from unseen threats. Anne Heche is playing high-ranking official, which would give me high hopes for the series . . . if the trailer didn't look so typical.
Premiere date: Sept. 25
Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders
Network: NBC
Primetime has true crime fever as so many of the '90s most notorious murders approach anniversaries. (The murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and JonBenét Ramsay have also been spotlighted in various specials over the past year.) Under the banner of Law & Order, NBC is retelling the story of the Menendez brothers, and why they eventually slayed their parents in their own home.
Premiere date: Sept. 26
Will & Grace
Network: NBC
The Will & Grace reboot is coming! All four stars — Debra Messing, Eric McCormack, Megan Mullally, and Sean Hayes — are reprising their characters.
Premiere date: Sept. 28
Black Lightning
Network: The CW
Hart of Dixie alum Cress Williams is returning to play Jefferson Pierce, aka superhero Black Lightning. The show will join the growing web of DC adaptations, including Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow.
Premiere date: Midseason
Life Sentence
Network: The CW
Pretty Little Liars star Lucy Hale is jumping from Freeform to The CW! She'll play a young woman who is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, does a bunch of crazy stuff because she thinks she's dying, then finds out she's actually totally healthy. It's a dramedy, so there will be touching moments mixed in with awkward "LOL sorry I did that when I thought I was dying" jokes.
Premiere date: Midseason
Dynasty
Network: The CW
Everything that was old is new again! The network is rebooting the classic '80s soap Dynasty into a modern drama. Creator Josh Schwartz (Gossip Girl) enlisted Elizabeth Gillies, Grant Show, and Nathalie Kelley for the revival, which will again focus on the rivalry between the megarich families the Carringtons and the Colbys.
Premiere date: Oct. 11
Valor
Network: The CW
Sleepy Hollow (RIP) actor Matt Barr will star in this intense-sounding military drama. According to Variety, "The drama unfolds in the present as well as in flashbacks to a failed mission involving one of the first female pilots in the unit, ultimately uncovering layers of personal and government/military secrets and leading to a season-long plan to rescue a group of MIA soldiers."
Premiere date: Oct. 9
