Shakespeare's Hamlet Plays Out From a Very Different Perspective in the Trailer For Ophelia

May 1 2019 - 9:28am

Daisy Ridley is leaving the futuristic world of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker [1] behind for a very different setting in her new film, Ophelia: the 14th century castle featured in Shakespeare's Hamlet. However, this reimagining of the classic tale is seen through the eyes of Ophelia (Ridley), who is Queen Gertrude's (Naomi Watts [2]) favorite lady-in-waiting before she attracts the attention of Prince Hamlet (George MacKay) and their forbidden love blossoms amid a time of war, tragedy, and death.

Although the events of director Claire McCarthy's film will play out much like they do in Shakespeare's original tragedy, the dialogue is spoken in a contemporary voice. In addition to Ridley, Watts, and MacKay, the cast is rounded out by Clive Owen [3] and Tom Felton, and the film will open in theaters on June 28. Watch the trailer above!
