Pilot Watch: Cougar Town

The networks have announced their Fall schedules, but which series will be worth watching? Throughout the Summer, as I watch the pilots, I'll be posting my first impressions. Note that a lot can change before a show actually makes it to air, so these aren't reviews, just quick thoughts on how the shows look now. Today's pick is the ABC comedy Cougar Town.

What's it about? A divorced 40-year-old real estate agent with a teenage son tries to find out if she can regain her dating mojo while also keeping her self-respect.

Who's in it? Courteney Cox, Busy Philipps, Christa Miller, Dan Byrd, Josh Hopkins, Brian Van Holt

The good: There's something familiar and welcoming about seeing Cox on screen again as Jules, and I got a kick out of some of the supporting players, especially Philipps as Cox's unabashedly trashy co-worker. There are a couple of funny continuing gags, including one with peanut butter crackers and another with footie pajamas. Byrd (Heroes, Aliens in America) does a great job of convincing us that having Jules for a mother would be embarrassing.

The bad: The show's language is surprisingly raunchy — I'd give an example, but I don't think I can print it here — and Jules can seem too sex-crazed and desperate (especially because it's hard to believe she's having such trouble finding a date in the first place). The show leans on physical comedy more than I expected, though to be fair, Cox can pull it off. I love that there's a show with a hot leading lady in her 40s, but judging from one episode, it doesn't seem quite like the sensitive, pro-woman comedy I was hoping for.

Will I watch? I'm really pulling for this show, and I have faith in its stars and creator, but I'm a little concerned about it. I'll still follow it for a while, at least.

Anon 12 you can find it on IMDB, I looked it up earlier cuz he looked familiar but I forgot who he was now... The show was okay. I like Josh Hopkins from Bros and Sisters and CCA, but the show was a bit over kill with the BJ on the lawn chairs and the over-sharing with her kid and even the stupid ex...some slightly subtle humor would be nice. I will give it a few more episodes before I judge.

Hahaha, Buzz... I stopped watching Heroes long ago, and actually contemplated going back to see Dan. But, even he was not enough to get me back. Anyone know how he did (I guess not enough to stay on the show)...whatever, I'll be watching Cougar Town!

That actually looks pretty funny! I love Courteney, so I'll definitely tune in for a couple episodes. I hate the name though...

Wasn't Dan Byrd last seen in Heroes? I'll be watching it for him and Josh Hopkins and Brian Van Holt (I've missed Brian since Threshold)!

I hate the name. I love Courteney though. I hope they work out the kinks and make this a hit. Did I mention the name sucks?
