Recap and Review of Glee Episode "Mattress" 2009-12-03 07:00:00

Glee-ful Highlights From Episode, "Mattress"

This week our beloved Glee club members encourage each other to smile, smile, smile — but there's more angst than laughs in the episode. The kids do their best to avoid having their photo defaced in the yearbook (though they ultimately fail), Sue tries once again to take down the club, but the biggest moment of all belongs to Mr. Shue when he finally discovers that Terri's pregnancy is a farce.

There's lots more to discuss with only one new episode to go (!!!), so to get into it, just

  • Mr. Shue struggles in many of his relationships this week; he's upset when Emma tells him that she has to skip sectionals for her own wedding, and he has spats with Principal Figgins and Sue when glee is denied a yearbook photo. But, of course, the crux of the episode is his fight with Terri. In arguably the most emotional scene of the show since Quinn's confrontation with her parents, a teary-eyed Will faces Terri head-on after he finds her pregnancy pad. It's kinda hard to believe that weeks and weeks of build up could unravel so quickly. Even after so many episodes of hating Terri's guts, it's hard not to feel bad for her when she's fighting with Will in the kitchen. The icing on the cake is that Will inadvertently brings down the glee club when he sleeps on one of their free mattresses, thus making them eligible for disqualification from sectionals. Poor Mr. Shue really can't catch a break.
  • There aren't many performances this time around (I found myself wishing we could hear a cover of "You Might Think" in the scene where Rachel is trying to recruit a co-captain), but the mattress scene is so classic. I couldn't help snickering at Rachel and Finn's overjoyed faces as they jump from mattress to mattress. The kids probably weren't even faking — who wouldn't want to bounce around in pjs?
  • The glee club gets closer than ever this week, leading up to the final moment when they put on their happy faces and take their yearbook photo. Even without their fearless leader (and packing the knowledge that they'll be chastised by their peers), the gang still musters up the courage to "Smile, though your heart is breaking." Side note: who knew Quinn had it in her to finally stand up to Sue and defend the glee club? She still has her bratty moments, but her character has definitely grown up a lot in these episodes.

So, how'd you feel about all the drama? Are you glad the cat's finally out of the bag? What are your hopes and predictions for the Fall finale? I'd love to see something finally happen with Emma and Mr. Shue, but I can't really let myself believe that Terri's out of the picture for good. Sound off below and be sure to check out the Glee Club group in the Buzz Community!

after reading this, i re-watched the "jump" scenes....quinn wasn't flipping/jumping around that much. it was mainly the 2 other cheerios and the 2 boys that break dance. can't wait for tonight's ep! :)

Also, I think Terri and Shue might be back together. And she's going to do more scheming and finally get kicked off the season so we don't have to see her in season 2......

Huge props for Will Morrison's acting chops! That scene gives me the chills, and it shows a darker side to his character.

I'm actually happy that next week is the last episode of Glee before it takes its break because I've felt that stories and character developments are dwindling and this episode is one of the weakest. It seems like they are recycling storylines (Glee kids think they are losers! Finn decides which side to choose! Sue trying to sabotage Glee club! Rachel is annoying!) Also, the song numbers are not as well done. I guess this is one of the "serious" episodes. I know some people are defending Terri, and I will continue to beat on my solitary drum about how much I hate her. Yes, she is afraid of losing her husband, and yes, Will is having an emotional affair with Emma, and YES, she fakes a pregnancy. But it is the ugly words that she said during the confrontation that truly makes me wish they kill her character off. First, she blames the Glee club, second, she said Will is not happy that's why he is in the relationship? So she wants her husband to be unhappy forever? Also, I don't know why Will is still with her. She said she already is NOT the same girl he married when they are off high school. I was more disgusted with her than with Sue this episode. However, I somewhat miss the evil Quinn when she stood up for Glee club and blackmail Sue! Way to stand up to her. I hope Ken and Sue will combine forces next season to destroy Glee club, that will be fun! Will should divorce Terri and be by himself for a moment so he can concentrate on Glee club. Can't wait for the finale, so much good songs! Already bought the vol 2 CD!

Nah, sorry, Mr. Shu never hit Terri. He got rightly upset and instead of taking his anger out physically he chose to leave the house. No domestic violence. I don't know what Mr/Ms. (how conveniently) Anonymous was watching.

I had no idea Will was capable of getting that angry....what an intense moment! So glad that is out in the open next is Finn finding out and with only one episode left I am guessing it has to happen next week. I loved Quinn standing up to Sue as well. I wonder if she will stay in Glee and say so long to Cheerios after giving birth or will she go back to the way she was before?

I was thinking the same thing about Quinn too! :)

I loved the episode. This has to be one of my favorite new series in it's entirety. This could just be my messed up mind, but has anyone else made the joke that "New Directions" could accidently be mistaken for "Nude Erections" ? I'll be here all week, folks, try the veal.

Matt Morrison really showed his acting chops last night. I was literally on the edge of my seat during that scene! I also loved Sue's corner segment. I can't remember the exact line, but it had to do with being visually assaulted by uglies and fatties. Love Sue!

I am the only one that was concerned that Quinn was flipping and jumping and landing on her stomach during the Jump scene? I totally loved the episode and I am sad it is going on hiatus until Spring.

This episode was absolutely one of the weakest so far. It was irritatingly predictable. The second Rachel volunteered the club, I told my boyfriend that it would come back to haunt the club if they were paid in any way. The moment Will found the bump, I suggested to him that Will would somehow use a mattress (maybe buying one at at discounted price? I was wrong there,) therefore accepting payment. And no one knows how Will is going to get out of the doghouse about accepting payment? That's the only thing I predicted that didn't happen in this episode, but my guess is that it'll happen next time. Will will get the $325 back for the quarter page ad as a result of Quinn's demands that Glee be given a page, and then Will can pay for the (conveniently cheap) mattress, and be in the clear.

I was SO glad to see the situation with Terri's fake pregnancy come to a head, so sad for Shue but I'm glad that it's finally out! Next big secret that needs to be exposed-- Puck being Quinn's baby daddy! I still love Sue- thought the how Sue C's it segment was hilairous! as well as the scene in the breakroom where she called Emma the wrong name a handful of times... Funny stuff!
