The Vampire Diaries "Fool Me Once": The Good, The Bad and The Bloody

It's tomb raider week on The Vampire Diaries as we finally set foot inside — while some step out — of the storied tomb.

The show is as intense as we've come to expect from the freshman series, and I think it's a fitting way to end things for a bit (the show is on hiatus for the next few weeks). I'm dying to discuss it, but since everything's a spoiler, come chat with me when you

    The Good

  • I liked that everyone is on the same page in this episode. This week is all about the tomb — everyone either wants in or is somehow involved in getting in. Anna and Ben are holding Bonnie and Elena in a motel room to get in on the action — Elena's leverage and Bonnie is needed for her witchery. Damon's M.O. has been all about the tomb for the past few episodes, Stefan is trying to keep Elena safe, Grams has to help Bonnie with the spell, and finally, a freezing-looking party in the woods means Jeremy is nearby too.
  • Damon and Elena have some amazing moments this week. When he's still angry with her, he coldly tells Stefan that he hopes Elena dies at the hands of Anna and Ben. You know what they say about a vampire scorned . . . anyway, Elena tries to make good with him in order to get the spellbook, and even though she goes because she's trying to manipulate him, they both get vulnerable. "You and I, we have something," she tells him. Yeah they do. Wanting him to trust her, she removes the necklace. How sexy is Damon re-fastening it on her? I had chills. More chills came when he tells her that he never compelled her on their road trip because he "wanted it to be real." The hug they share later when Damon doesn't find Katherine in the tomb is a comforting one — not sexy, but another thing that's real between them.
  • It's always awesome when Grams is around, especially when she's literally giving Damon a headache. Just for giving her attitude! Love it. The sassy grandmother is necessary to help with the spell, and even tries to trick Damon; she never unseals the tomb, she just opens the door and makes it so vampires can't come out. Sadly, it demands too much of her and she passes away later that night. I was devastated at this turn, since I love Jasmine Guy's character and wonder what this means for Bonnie. How will she learn to be a better witch?
  • Twist! Katherine is not inside the tomb! I honestly did not see that coming, but it's a juicy development. Pearl, newly freed by her daughter Anna, tells Damon that Katherine charmed her way out of the tomb, seducing a guard. Pouring salt directly into his wounds, Anna admits she saw Katherine in Chicago in 1983, and knew where Damon was but simply didn't care. Damon's evil, but his heart is breaking; what's he going to do now that his hundred-plus-years quest to find the woman he loves was all a waste? My guess is that this demoralized Damon will continue to hunt Katherine — but this time, with bitter malice.
  • Is it wrong that I don't hate Anna so much? She just wants her mom back and doesn't kill Jeremy even though she could. I also kind of want her — and Pearl — to stick around.
    The Bad

  • Look alive, Bonnie and Elena — before Stefan throws the curtains in the motel open to save the girls, I was exasperated that they hadn't thought of that themselves first. Even if one of them weren't a witch, I'd think these two could think of some way to escape Ben. Just once I'd like to see a girl on this show, namely Elena, rescue herself.
  • Jeremy Googles Bings vampires . . . because? I know he had been doing research into Mystic Falls's monstrous history, but it kind of comes out of left field. I don't know what I'm more perplexed by — the blatant product placement or the lack of reasoning for Jeremy to be researching with a headache.
    The Bloody

  • My skin crawled the whole time Elena is inside the tomb. All those gray, dessicated faces and bloodshot eyes! Eek. That's not even as bad as it gets for her inside; Anna uses Elena's wrist as a snack for her mom to come back to life.
  • I knew nothing good would come of the blood bag Damon smashes on the wall of the tomb when he can't find Katherine! One vampire gets a taste and the strength to leave. Look forward to some animal attacks in the near future, Mystic Falls.

Considering we have a few weeks until we get another new episode of the show, I'm pretty satisfied with this episode. We finally have an ongoing storyline wrapped up, and the cliffhanger isn't as torturous as it could have been. What did you think of the episode? And what do you think Katherine has been up to — and how soon we'll see her? Tell me below, and in the meantime, don't forget to join the Hooked on Vampire Diaries group in the Buzz Community!

In response to the vampire getting out after they had "supposably" sealed the tomb shut: I think whose ever blood that was in the pouch was the key. Enough for the vampire to open the tomb with his bare, decrepid hands and free himself has to account for something. I'm waiting to see what in the world Elena has in common with Katherine. HAS to be something. A thought crossed my mind of Elena just playing dumb and being Katherine all along..but then that's whole new ball game. I'm excited, after the hiatus, for the upcoming weeks. :)

The tomb scene was kind of terrifying, but this episode was heartbreaking at the end! Damon looked so miserable and I'm sad that Bonnie's grandmother died. And that version of "Run" at the end just made it more sad. I'm so excited to see what the series has waiting for Damon's character with the whole Katherine thing. I'd also like to see more of Anna and Pearl. I know we haven't seen much of Pearl, but she seems like a really nice vampire. I think Jeremy was just pretending to act like he had no idea what happened at the party when he was talking to Elena afterwards in their house... "Oooh, I don't remember anything, but I swear I didn't take any drugs!" I think he remembers Anna's face, knows he was whacked on the head, and is starting to get suspicious.

I think Jeremy was also suspicious since Anna was the one to help him with his report and told him all about vampires. I am loving Ian as Damon, he portrays him perfectly! I hate that Grams died I felt so bad for Bonnie! :( Also Katherine not being in the tomb was not surprising at all, but I have read the books, in the books she faked her death. Although the books ARE quite different, the big important pieces of the story are still being portrayed.

am i the only one hoping this love triangle is never going to happen? as much as i like damon, i think stefan and elena are such a cute couple and if d hooked up with e, there's not much of a chance left that the brothers will build up some kind of relation

Katerina Graham is a fantastic actress. I was soooo sad for her and her grams. I think Bonnie is going to be feeling guilty for her grandma's death :( I agree Jeremy grew suspicious because of Anna's eyes. Anna is not nice but her intentions were understandable. Katherine is so EVIL. LUV IT!

Great, chilling episode with lots of suspense and a bit of tragedy. :( I felt sorry for both Damon and Bonnie - Grams was a kick-ass witch, and poor B will have to figure things out for herself. As for Katherine not being in that tomb... didn't surprise me at all. It would've been just a bit TOO easy for him to just find her in there. But it was shocking that she knew where he was the entire time and didn't even care. I could just see the heartbreak all over his face... Also, like what some people have already mentioned, it's clear that Jeremy remembered the change in Anna's face (twice). That excited me for some reason. @funkygeorge - Remember Bonnie and Grams were trying to take the seal down so they could come out... Grams warned that there probably wouldn't be enough strength to put it back up.. and as you saw, it drained her of her life. :(

This episode was great LOVE the twist of Katherine not being in the tomb and not giving a crap about Damon. I am confused about the vamp coming out of the tomb at the end. I thought that Bonnie and her grams were straining to keep the tomb open and when Elena, Damon, and Stefan ran out they stopped and the tomb shut again. So how did the vamp just wander out?

such a good episode!! damon and elena have intense chemistry. he's always wanted everything to be "real" and i just.... melted when he placed the necklace back on her my heart just broke when damon realized that katherine wasn't in the tomb and didn't bother to find him. he loved her in vain sigh. ian somerhalder

I am devastated over losing Gram! Who is going to help Bonnie navigate her new witch powers? I cried for her. I really did! I did NOT expect Katherine to not be in the tomb! Talk about a plot twist! And where is she? Will Damon find her? Will she be confused for Elena if she ever returns to Mystic Falls? Kind of like an evil twin plot line? Interesting... I do feel sorry for Damon. All that time for nothing. I wonder if, like Buzz said, he'll be fueled by anger instead of love? The CW needs to stop torturing me with putting this show on hiatus! I can't take it anymore!

This show just keeps getting better. I thought is was to easy for Katherine to be in that tomb. I was not surprise when she wasn't their. But I am very curious to see who and what the new vampire is. I don't think Damon will look for Katherine. He realized that she don not love him. I think he will try to whooe Elena instead.

Great episode!! I agree with anonymous that Jeremy was looking up vampires because that was the 2nd time he saw Anna's face change like that. He's onto it. And can I just say..I love the fact that he used Bing! You see people in movies and shows googling all the time so that product placement was no different. Bing rocks! March 25th can't come fast enough!

mind blasting ep! i had goosebumps and hung on to every word spoken. I love what's going down with Damon and how the heartbreak has brought him and elena together. And stephan sees it. Maybe a tad bit insecure about the closeness? One has to wonder what is going through his head when he observes elena/damon moments. Anna was such a creeper in the beginning, but seriously...her story line made me like her more than i ever thought i could.

Amazing ep. I had pretty much the same reactions & questions you did, buzz. I am so, so sad that this show is on hiatus, though. March 25 can't come soon eough.

Wow what a great episode last night, I'm impressed. It was really well written. I'm sad to see Bonnie's grandma go, because I'm also wondering how will she learn to be a better witch? When Elena was in the tomb it made my skin crawl! lol what an intense episode. The vampire at the end freaked me out, nice acting guys :) I loved the moments Elena and Damon shared .. Delena all the way :) This show is just amazing, every week is something new. Desperate for March!
