Ronen Rubinstein Talks Orange Is the New Black and Feeling the Love From Fans

Jul 15 2015 - 10:15am

Although Ronen Rubinstein appeared in just one episode of Orange Is the New Black [1] season three, he and his character, Nathan, made quite the impression. Between Rubinstein's good looks [2] and his lovable role, the actor got a big reaction from fans of the show. As Nathan, Rubinstein pops up in a series of flashbacks with Taryn Manning's character, Tiffany Doggett, and their sweet romance stands in stark contrast to her darker scenes.

We talked to Rubinstein about his experience on the show, what it was like to work with Manning, and whether he might return for season four. He also mentioned two upcoming movies he'll appear in, which come out later this year: Some Kind of Hate and Condemned. Keep reading to find out what Rubinstein had to say about Orange Is the New Black [3], plus how he feels about all the attention from fans.

POPSUGAR: So you came into Orange Is the New Black [4] in season three. How did you prepare for the role? Were you already a fan of the show?

Ronen Rubinstein: I got a pretty brief history of the character, who he was, where he's from, his past, for example. And then I added a little Southern twang to the audition, to the character, because I thought, you know, the flashback's going to be from the South. I went in, I did my thing, and I got a call a couple days later.

PS: What was it like to work with Taryn Manning?

RR: Man, well, she's, first of all, very talented. Very, very professional. I have high praise for her, because she put herself into a position with that character and the subject matter that she faces in that show, and it's a very — it's a subject that not a lot of people want to speak about or want to show.

PS: Nathan only appears in one episode, but he makes a big impression — partly because he's such a sweet guy, and those flashbacks come between such dark scenes. How did you and Taryn prepare for the bedroom scene?

RR: I shot for three days. We met in hair and makeup every morning, we just spoke pretty much like two humans, and then we talked a little bit about the actual scenes, and then we just did it. There was no shyness to it, there was no — it was very, very professional.

PS: It came across so naturally.

RR: It was very comfortable, you know? I was comfortable and she was, and there was none of that, "Oh man, this is going to be so weird. This is nerve-racking." It was just, "Let's do this." It's a great scene, and a great character. I enjoyed my character very much because he's actually a sweet guy and that show doesn't have a lot of them. It's very special to have one of those.

PS: Do you have any idea if you'll make an appearance in season four?

RR: A lot of people have asked me that. I honestly have no idea. I mean, the creators are very, very creative. It would be awesome. I mean, I can't lie, it would be unbelievable, but I have no idea, to be honest.

PS: Where would you speculate that Nathan ended up?

RR: Maybe visiting her in jail? Just because that's kind of a recurring theme right now with other characters. It would be cool if he just pops up and he's like, "I'm back."

PS: Obviously Orange Is the New Black [5] has a pretty rabid fanbase, and one glance at your Instagram account shows that you're getting a huge reaction. What has that attention been like?

RR: Well, it was a bit overwhelming at first. I did not expect it. I'm definitely not used to it. But then it was actually very nice because a lot of the fans — pretty much all of the fans — are very, very nice. It's pretty funny, too, the things that people say, and they're creative. A lot of people are making really cool collages and photo remakes and it's cool to see what they can do for just this one character that they fell in love with, you know? I'm very, very honored they feel that way.

PS: That's awesome. Have you seen anyone in person who's recognized you yet?

RR: So actually, this week I had my first two — one guy at a basketball court that I play at, and one girl at the gym that I go to. It was pretty funny, I was like, "Wow, my first one."

PS: Speaking of your Instagram account, I couldn't help but notice that you're pretty great at lip-syncing . . . Do you sing? Are you a singer in general?

RR: I love to sing. I sing all the time in the car.

PS: So do you have a go-to karaoke song?

RR: [Laughs] My go-to-karaoke song would probably have to be any Red Hot Chili Peppers song.

PS: Strong choice.
