Running Wilde 2010 TCA Panel Features Will Arnett and Keri Russell

Running Wilde Cracks Up the TCA, Talks Arrested Development

For those of you who miss Arrested Development with all your heart, the Running Wilde panel at the Summer TCA is definitely the one you'll be most excited to hear about. Star Will Arnett reunites with Arrested creator Mitch Hurwitz for the new Fox comedy, and they took the stage with the other stars, including Keri Russell, to talk about their new venture as well as the old, all the while making a room full of television critics cry tears of laughter.

  • First things first — no, there was no solid news about the Arrested Development movie, but it sounds like Hurwitz hasn't given up on it: "We very much loved doing Arrested and do miss it, and it's why we want to make the movie still."
  • I had thought of the show simply as a comedy, but the panel reiterated that this is a romantic comedy, so we can expect the relationship between Russell's and Arnett's characters to take center stage. Arnett noted that "We're kind of out of our comfort zone."

  • The original pilot is getting tweaked to make the show work better, including the addition of David Cross, another Arrested alum. Why did they get Cross? Arnett dropped one of the only F bombs I heard at the TCA, saying that when it came up, they just thought, "F*** it, we might as well get him." Noted.
  • Critics wanted to know why Russell chose to do a sitcom (her answer: "It was too good to pass up") and furthermore, whether she was funny. Hurwitz pointed out that both Russell and Arnett — who's so known for comedy — will be playing against type often, as they're having fun finding levels for him to be dramatic, and finding comedic moments for her.
  • Costar Peter Serafinowicz added to the silly atmosphere, making a crack about the Fox network: "I think they've come a long way since they just used to do documentaries about foxes." But being serious (well, semi-serious), he said that the humor of Running Wilde is "very smart humor. . . but it's also very stupid." My kind of show.
