10 Grey's Anatomy Breakups That Destroyed Our Fragile Hearts

Completely disarming McDreamy, Meredith delivers her iconic "pick me, choose me, love me" speech, begging Derek to sign his divorce papers and stay with her. She asks him to meet her at Joe's, and he's a no-show. Poor Mer lays her heart out on the table only to have Derek be late and basically choose Addison in the next episode without saying anything to Meredith (at least nonprofessionally, as they do work a case together).

After packing all of his things, Burke ghosts Cristina at the altar. We'll be damned if we're not sobbing to Cristina tearing apart her wedding gown to Ingrid Michaelson's "Keep Breathing." She deserves so much better than this.

Izzie serves Alex a "Dear John" letter and leaves town when she's under the impression that he got her fired. She pops up a few episodes later in the sixth season, hoping to make things work between them when she finds out it wasn't him. While Alex is happy she's cancer-free, he realizes he deserves better. It's really too bad, since the pair of them were almost as iconic as Derek and Meredith. Alex truly cared for her, but in the end, things turned out for the better and he got the closure he deserved.

While Ben and Miranda eventually tie the knot, their first breakup hurts. At the beginning of the seventh season, Miranda still recoils from the trauma of the terrible hospital shooting. Ben, who had been golfing the day of the massacre, can't understand her grief. In the moment, Chandra Wilson delivers one of her most heartbreaking lines, saying that she's "held together with tape and glue."

The truth is a bitter pill to swallow, especially when John Legend croons "All of Me" in the background. After operating in the dark, Cristina expresses her love for the O.R. to Owen. She then asks him if he had wanted to adopt a patient's son, who would have gone into a foster home if neither of his parents woke up. The hard questions continue. She asks if she will ever be enough for him. Radio silence. The cardiothoracic surgeon leaves, telling Owen she wishes it were different. Cue breakup tears.

Did Matthew ever stand a chance when Japril was ripe and ready for picking? April and Jackson are best friends with a pretty extensive history. At her wedding, Jackson confesses his love for her in front of all their friends, much to poor Matthew's chagrin. She runs away with the Avery golden boy while Sleeping at Last's weepy version of "Total Eclipse of the Heart" plays in the background. As sad as things are for Matthew in this particular moment, we're glad he and April get a beautiful second chance in the 14th season.

We shipped Calzona so freakin' hard that it stung when their relationship crumbled into pieces. The makings of their breakup start with Callie's call to amputate Arizona's leg after the plane crash, and soon after, Arizona begins to feel misunderstood by her wife, which results in a brief affair. When their therapist asks them to spend time apart, Callie realizes she's happier alone. Goodbye, existence of true love.

Remember when we had all of our eggs in the Japril basket, which only strengthened after their impromptu wedding and the death of baby Samuel? When April returns from Jordan a new woman, she's trying really hard to make her marriage work. But alas, her absence creates a cut too deep inside of Jackson. While she cooks a meal, Jackson's angry she hasn't left his apartment and tells her he wants a divorce. Drama ensues, of course, as it turns out she's pregnant with Harriet.

Meredith and Nathan have just begun a fragile but special relationship when they find out his ex-fiancé Megan Hunt is still alive. Meredith tells him to go, since she would have left if it were Derek. What really steals the moment is Calum Scott's sad cover of "Dancing on My Own." At least Mer realizes she's enough for herself!

Owen makes a romantic, impromptu trip to Germany after hooking up with Amelia. Poor Teddy figures this out soon enough and breaks things off with him despite their intimate time together. Easy come, easy go, right? It's especially heartbreaking since a lot of fans have been shipping the two for so long. They won't be separated forever, though — she's carrying Owen's child, after all.
