One of my top cynical love songs is the Silver Jews' "Random Rules," from the 1998 album American Water. It has one of my favorite first lines ever — "In 1984, I was hospitalized for approaching perfection" — but it didn't quite fit on today's Valentine's Day playlist.
So, I'm glad I have an excuse to post it anyway — that is, there is a new documentary about the band called Silver Jew: The Movie premiering at this year's South by Southwest Film Festival. I'm not surprised, since this band is one whose story nearly overpowers its music. Frontman David Berman founded the Jews with Pavement's Stephen Malkmus, but recording has been interrupted over the years by Berman's battles with drug addiction and depression.
