Sony Kills Spider-Man 4 Without Sam Raimi, Changes Premise to Reboot 2010-01-11 16:30:00

Spider-Man 4 Is Dead, a New Younger Spidey Takes Its Place

Following recent script woes, Sony has announced via press release that it's pulling the plug on Spider-Man 4. In its place, they're developing a fresh storyline that takes the webslinger back to high school. The film will reportedly focus "on a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises" (wait, I thought that was the first Spider-Man?!).

The studio is eying a Summer 2012 date, but the other big change: it's bringing in a brand-new cast and production team for the reboot. That means that Tobey Maguire and director Sam Raimi are both saying goodbye.

This swap really irks me. To salvage Spider-Man 4's problems by recasting just seems like a desperate attempt at some blockbuster-sized money. Sure, the younger Spidey will give the franchise new life, but I think I would've rather seen it die — at least for several years until the memory of Maguire's version is long gone (heaven help us if they cast a less adept teen heartthrob for the role). Don't you agree? Or are you excited for a makeover of the beloved superhero?

Does this mean we are not getting a Venom movie with Topher Grace? That's all I ever really wanted. But no, I think this is crazy. Spidey 3 did suck, but they need to wait until like 2018 to do another one fresh.

They should just pull the plug all together. That series is tired. Aren't superhero movies kind of old news, anyway? Time to think of something new, hollywood!

I'm not a fan of the Spider Man movies, so I don't really care because I wouldn't see anything regardless. But, um, didn't the first movie take place in high school? Or am I thinking of the funny cartoon I used to watch when I was little? Didn't he turn into Spider Man after being bitten by a radioactive spider on a field trip?

Awe, this is very sad. I have loved Spider Man ever since I was a little girl! I was really excited for Spider Man 4. 3 wasn't as great as I hope but the special effects were simply amazing!

yeah the third one was ridiculous but i don't think remaking it will solve any of the franchise's problems. i, for one, won't go see it because it seems like just a few years ago that the first one came out and i don't want to waste my money on something i've seen so recently.

Spider-Man 3 sucked so bad that I'm glad they're not doing another one. But I think it's too soon for a reboot.

Oh yeah! I didn´t see Tobey as Spidy anyway. And Kristen Dunst was more annoying than a win. So redo it! But don´t cast Shia LeBeuf or somebody like him as the new Spidy!!!! What memory of Tobey and Spidy? There were more memories about Christopher Reeve and Superman and the made a remake of it!!!! This argument so does not count.

oh well, at least tobey is getting out on top, instead of making a crappy 4th movie. his credibility as an actor will still be intact. let hollywood screw it up without him!

Won't watch it without Tobey.

I agree with you, if Tobey and Raimi aren't involved then they should just stop and go out ahead and they choose to remake (which we all know they will) wait for 10+ yrs to do so.

I really liked the Spider-man movies with Tobey but I do admit they were gradually getting worse so I'm glad there isn't a fourth. I agree though that they should just let the francise die. It does seem like they know Spider-man makes money so they're going to milk it for all it's worth.

Noo, this sucks. I really like Tobey Maguire's protrayal of Spiderman. I think they have to wait a bit longer before doing a remake/recasting the role. And who in young Hollywood is really worthy of Maguire's role? I think Taylor Lautner's good looking and all, but I don't think he has the acting chops lol.

I was surprised that everyone was on board for a Spiderman 4. It seemed like Dunst lost interest long ago. The movies were decent but perhaps it's best to leave it alone.

It's pretty much what happened to The Vampire Lestate and why they combined two great books into one crappy movie. They were about to lose it back to Anne Rice, and she was going to charge them through the nose to get it back.

I am willing to bet my paycheck that the studio has to have a film in production by a certain date or the rights revert back to the family or whomever hold the rights. The same thing is about to happen with Fantastic Four. If they don't start production by a certain date they lose the rights and have to pay for them all over again. And I'm willing to bet next weeks check that number would be significantly higher than what they paid last time. There is also the chance that they could run into a bidding war with other studios.

I would hate it if they redid the series. It really sucks when Hollywood is just in it for the blockbuster glory. There really is no NEED for a new younger version.
