A New Star Wars Theory About Rey's Parents Has Surfaced, and It's a Doozy

Aug 2 2016 - 11:00am

One of the biggest questions that came out of Star Wars: The Force Awakens [1] was the issue of who Rey's parents are [2]. There have been countless theories dedicated to trying to figure out who her family could be, judging everything from her British accent to the fact that she heard Obi-Wan Kenobi's voice during her vision in Maz Kanata's castle. Although plenty of people think Luke Skywalker seems to be her father, a new hypothesis has been thrown into the ring that suggests Rey's lineage is far more sinister. The theory, which was first published on Medium [3] and later broken down by YouTube user Vincent Vendetta [4], presents a pretty convincing case for Emperor Palpatine being Rey's grandfather. The idea uses her fighting style (which is similar to Palpatine's), her interactions with the Dark Side thus far, and the fact that Kylo Ren somehow knew her already as reasoning, and we have to admit that it makes quite a bit of sense. We won't know the answer for sure until Episode VIII comes out [5] next year, so if you need us, we'll be obsessing over this until then.
