TV Tonight: The Gates

I'm so glad HBO officially launched a YouTube channel on Monday, because had I not been poking through their videos, I might have completely missed tonight's premiere of The Gates. The documentary traces artists Christo and Jean-Claude's 26-year-battle to convince New York City to let them set up their art installation "The Gates," a set of more than 7,500 metal gates with billowing orange fabric that wound through Central Park for 16 days in February 2005.

I've seen a previous film by the same filmmakers about Christo and Jean-Claude's "Running Fence" project, and it was a fascinating look at how hard the artists will push and how much they believe in their work — however fleeting the results might be. You know I didn't even know what the gates looked like, so when I saw them I didn't realize it was art, I thought there was major construction going on. So ugly!

Thank you so much for this posting, Buzz! I've set up the DVR so that I can relive the experience of walking though Central Park on a cold February weekend and experiencing the joy of seeing The Gates. It truly was a life defining experience!
