Avengers: Endgame [1] hasn't come out yet, but we already have tons of questions, especially when it comes to the enigmatic timeline. Obviously, the movie's going to start some time after Infinity War [2]. The real question is, exactly how much time has passed since, as the Internet so aptly puts it, The Snapture [3]? It could be a couple of months, but some fans believe that it could be years. Here are key reasons why, after watching the new trailers [4], we think that there's probably a significant leap in time in Endgame.
Black Widow's hair change is a huge hint.
Hair is a big deal in the trailers. There's Hawkeye's infamous mohawk switch-up [5], of course, and then there's Black Widow's more telling ginger and blonde situation. At the beginning of the first trailer, Natasha's hair is icy blond and cropped short. This is her style throughout Infinity War, so it's not too revealing of a clue. Later, when she's talking to Hawkeye in what looks like Japan, Black Widow's hair is tied up, which implies that there's been enough time for it to grow out from a bob (we're guessing six months, give or take). Plus, at certain angles, her hair even looks a little reddish.
The second trailer all but confirms the hair theory. There's a scene where she's chatting with Cap, her hair a red-ombre color to indicate even more time passing by. Fast forward a little, and we see footage of her wearing a blondish medium-length braid as she's training. There's Natasha again with even redder hair — first when talking to Hawkeye, and then when prepping in an Ant-Man-esque suit with The Avengers.
Ant-Man's daughter is another clue for a significant time jump.
By the time the first trailer hits, we know that Scott Lang is no longer trapped in the Quantum Realm as he waves at Steve and Natasha's camera saying, "Hi, is anyone home? This is Scott Lang. We met a few years ago at the airport, in Germany?" In the second trailer, he's standing in front of a boarded-up house looking at a telephone pole covered in missing persons posters, which signals that there's been at least a couple of months for people to deal with Thanos's mess. But what if even more time has passed? In a postcredits scene [6] of Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scott gets trapped in the Quantum Realm. What if it ends up being years after he's finally able to get out? Time is weird in there.
One important clue lies with Scott's daughter. The actress who plays Cassie Lang [7] in the upcoming Avengers film is significantly older than her original portrayer. Abby Ryder Fortson, who plays Cassie in the first two Ant-Man movies, was 9 years old during the filming of Ant-Man and the Wasp. The actress playing Scott's daughter in Endgame, Emma Fuhrmann, was 16-years-old during principal photography for Endgame. Then again, Ant-Man could be seeing his daughter in the future through time traveling, or we might be seeing her in some sort of epilogue scene.
Anyway, we can't wait to find out what's going on with the timeline in Endgame, since these details definitely seem too significant to be plot holes. Time is of the essence here, and we wouldn't be surprised to see the Avengers toy with the physics of literal time and space yet again.
