The Vampire Diaries "Bad Moon Rising": The Good, the Bad, and the Bloody

Owwwoooo! That's my werewolf howl in tribute to this week's episode of The Vampire Diaries, which turns its lens on the lycan residents of Mystic Falls.

Caroline's vampire exploration is also coming along, for better or worse, and we see the return of a couple of characters (Alaric, Aunt Jenna) as well as another new face. But I'm dying to break down the specifics of this week, so for my post game on the good, the bad, and the bloody, just

The Good

  • Alaric's back! The Salvatore brothers recruit him to help them figure out what's going on with the Lockwood boys, and he finally sheds some light on the situation: werewolves. Damon doesn't believe it at first, but once he puts the pieces together he knows it's bad news. The next move is a trip to Duke University to find Isobel's research on Mystic Falls. We meet Vanessa (Dexter's Courtney Ford), a student of Isobel's — or, rather, we meet her arrow first, as Damon takes one right in the back. Vanessa reveals all the werewolf gossip they need: the cursed men turn into wolves during a full moon, they prey on vampires, and their bites are fatal.
  • Stefan stays behind so he can babysit newborn vamp Caroline, for what I like to call Good Vampire Lessons. First lesson: hunting rabbits to eat. He also teaches her that being a vampire amplifies aspects of your personality, which means that Miss Forbes turns into an ultra-jealous drama queen (much to Matt's chagrin). But what I like even more is the friendship that Caroline and Stefan are forming, especially when she teaches him something about himself: that he has both a "serious vampire look" and a "worried vampire look." It's funny because it's true. I hope the Stefan/Caroline bond lasts because by episode end, she and Matt are done.
  • Full moon alert! We finally see a werewolf on the show, but it's only Mason. Tyler's getting closer to finding out the secret, following Mason to a creepy room under the Lockwood's estate. As the moon waxes (or wanes or whatever . . .), we find out the purpose of the room. Mason chains himself up when he's about to transition so he won't hurt anyone. Tyler's libido foils this plan, and Mason makes himself scarce so as not to be discovered by his nephew when he brings a girl down to the room.
  • I'm glad Elena is pursuing the mystery of why she and Katherine look so alike, and she asks Vanessa specifically about doppelgangers. Vanessa asserts that the living breathing doubles torment those they look like. Interesting. Later, Damon gives Elena a hint, and maybe a new key to discovering more about her potential doppelganger: Katerina Petrova, Katherine's original, Euro name.
  • Elena and Damon's sexual tension lives on, despite her resolve to hate him after what he did to Jeremy. They share a sweet scene by the car at Duke where he asks, "Have I lost you forever?" She doesn't answer, but I think her eyes say no. Of course, even after he apologizes, she tells him later that he has lost her forever, so he pulls out a little barb of his own. Confronting her about the fact that she has just used him for info on Katherine, he seethes, "You and Katherine have a lot more in common than just your looks." Zing.

The Bad

  • Elena, you're classier than making out with Stefan in front of Damon to make him jealous. Mostly it just weirds me out, so please stop.
  • I applaud the show for using real wolves for the actual werewolves (like True Blood), because it's very tough to not make them cheesy. That said, our first look at a were — the silhouette and yellow eyes Stefan sees — is cheesy, and definitely not as creepy as the rest of the scene just before when Stefan finds Mason's truck. P.S. Stefan, ever seen a horror movie? If you see claw marks in the ground, don't keep investigating, run.
    The Bloody

  • Caroline and Matt's hanky panky in the woods turns into her first bloody taste of Matt. It gets worse when Were-Mason attacks them, and Stefan has to save everyone. Just as Mason pounces on Caroline (and I assumed, in all honesty, that she was toast), Tyler shouts "No!", and Mason takes off. Big questions: why didn't Tyler turn, and why could he control Mason by just shouting?
  • This one isn't so bloody as it is a promise that there will be, in fact, blood: Katherine is still in Mystic Falls, and she visits Caroline, promising fun. Will they become frenemies, or will Caroline be another of Katherine's victims?

The second season of The Vampire Diaries hasn't given us a dull moment yet, and I'm loving the way Caroline's vampire maturation is going. Likewise, I think the werewolf storyline so far is just adding more excitement. What about you? Did you like "Bad Moon Rising" too? Agree with everything Shadiyaray said. Great episode, even genuinely scary at times. Again, sucks how far back the UK is to the US. This season may top the first which would be pretty amazing.

I do believe that Elena is in love with Stefan, but there is chemistry between her and Damon. I think that she does care about him, but it may be somehow rooted in desire. Especially since he's actively pursuing her. I mean if I was dating Stefan and Damon, with those dark looks and amazing blue eyes were pursuing me, It would be hard to resist as well. I also think that the kiss that she shared with Stefan wasn't to show Damon that she wants Stefan, but to make him jealous. Damon knows this. The man is a 160-170 years old. He knows that eventually he will get back into her good graces. It's only a matter of time. I think that the chemistry between them is great, but I would much rather see her with Stefan. Sleeping with two brothers isn't a good look.

I didn't like Elena making out with Stefan in front of Damon either... that was a little petty. I loved the werewolf... I'm guessing it won't be long before Tyler transitions himself. Maybe he's in a sort of werewolf puberty? Haha. Although, good call to bethany0403 on the moonstone. Maybe that's why Mason wanted it so much. I loved when Damon said that Elena and Katherine are a lot more alike than just looks! Such a zinger! I absolutely love seeing how their relationship plays out. I have faith they'll put their checkered past behind them and eventually be friends again :) I don't like seeing Damon feel defeated because his one-liners are way better when he's being cocky! I also love Stefan and Caroline's budding friendship. I think Stefan feels good to be able to teach the ways of a nice vampire to someone. Now he has someone to connect with a little more. I like Caroline so much more as a vampire! Very interested to see how the Katherine/Caroline thing plays out. I don't know if Caroline will be a bad girl or if she'll do everything in her power to stay away from Katherine's tricks.

i couldn't believe it when elena said damon had lost her forever. and after his little comment about her using him, i have to say, i thought she totally deserved it lol. that said, of course i love them together and i hope they're able to mend their friendship i'm also wondering why tyler didn't change, and why he was able to stop mason. the alpha dog theory is interesting! katherine is back! i'm really excited for what's next

Perhaps the reason Tyler didn't change was because of the moonstone? I am guessing that is why Mason wanted it. I too love the buddy cop movie dynamic between Aleric and Damon and hope to see more of it in the future. They crack me up. I've never been a fan of Stefan, but found myself liking him more and more as he interacted with Caroline. I kinda hope these two get together. He seems much less uptight with her. Finally, how did Katherine get into Caroline's house without being invited in? Did her mom think she was Elena and let her in? Curious.

Glad Alaric is back. I love the Damon-Alaric team! I was so sad when Elena told Damon that he's lost her forever. I hope Damon doesn't give up and I would love to see them as friends again. I like that Damon put her in her place by comparing her manipulativeness to Katherine. I hope that Elena takes that to heart and is nicer to Damon again.

I found myself a little bothered by Elena this week (making out with Stefan purposly infront of Damon and leading Damon on to get what she wanted). Damon was right when he told her that she had more in common with Katherine then she thought. Love Alaric's return and I hope to see good things for poor Jenna.

Great episode! I was waiting for Tyler to change into a werewolf too. Interesting that he didn't. I'm liking Caroline as a vampire, but I do feel badly for Matt. I was glad to see Alaric back too!

I kind of love the whole Caroline/Stefan relationship in the same way that I love the whole Jessica/Bill relationship on TrueBlood. Both shows are doing a good job of making the whole Vampire Mentor thing endearing. And can I say that my heart totally broke for Caroline when she purposefully pushed Matt away at the end. I loved watching Damon try to get back into Elena's good graces and was SO with him when he chastised her for being manipulative. Great episode!
