We certainly never thought we'd ever see a TV wedding as devastating as Game of Thrones' season three "Red Wedding [1]," but The Vampire Diaries just came really close. Next week is the season finale, when the big stuff usually goes down, but we knew something was up when we saw those finale pictures [2] in which Elena is conspicuously absent. Obviously: spoiler alert.

So to recap: we were invited to Jo and Alaric's picture-perfect wedding [3], and just after they say their vows, Jo is repeatedly stabbed in the torso (and she's pregnant, which is another "Red Wedding" thing). The perpetrator is invisible, and when he materializes, we see that it's Kai, who had been trapped by Bonnie in a prison world and had somehow escaped. And Jo isn't the only victim: Kai, apparently as powerful as ever, destroys the church, and we see Elena, injured and possibly dead (which we totally hypothesized [4], BTW).

Of course, we knew that Nina Dobrev was leaving [5] after this season, but we're still kind of in shock over what just went down. Can't anyone be happy on this show?! Poor Elena, poor Jo, poor Alaric.
