Weekend Box Office Results 2008-03-03 08:30:00

Box Office: Semi-Pro Semi-Beats Out Competition

Despite earning the top spot at the box office, the predictable laughs in Will Ferrell's Semi-Pro only earned $15.3 million over the weekend. This is considered a disappointing sum, especially compared to opening weekends of other Ferrell films like Talladega Nights and Blades of Glory. Variety reports that this underwhelming performance by the basketball comedy may have been due to mediocre reviews and an R-rating.

Vantage Point was only bumped down one spot to No. 2 over the weekend followed by The Spiderwick Chronicles at No. 3. The adaptation of Buzz Book Club's February selection The Other Boleyn Girl took the fourth spot earning an estimated $8.3 million. Penelope starring Reese Witherspoon and Christina Ricci also opened this weekend coming in at No. 8 behind Jumper, Step Up 2 The Streets, and Fool's Gold.

Filling out the top ten were Oscar-nominated films No Country for Old Men and Juno.

Unless you think stereotyping working class cities and people is funny, you won't like Semi- Pro. Will Ferrell, ABA basketball, the 70s, humor, all take a back seat to the real story line and exhausting punch-line: people from blue-collar backgrounds with ambitions and aspirations beyond the world they are suppose to know are foolish idiots for thinking their hopes and dreams are tenable. It's so bad, you can't help wondering how and why this movie got green-lighted. It's almost as if Hollywood studio execs got together after Michael Moore's famous Oscar acceptance speech to draw straws to determine which studio would sacrifice its reputation in order to undermine and discredit Moore's upbringing and world-view once and for all. Then it was simply a matter of employing the most sinister and subversive weapon in their arsenal: frat- boy comedy aimed at 18- to 35-year old suburban white males. It's not like we're ever going to see an action-packed historical epic about the Flint Sit-Down Strikes coming out of Hollywood. No no. Can't have working class pride getting in the way of the upper crust's efforts to justify their false superiority and the manner in which they treat the people who actually do the work that generates the wealth that butters their bread. For all intents and purposes, everyone who worked on Semi-Pro is a Semi-Scab.

Semi- Pro, was the second worst movie of the year for me. Second only to "One Missed Call" I think word of mouth will drop this inept movie out of theaters pretty quickly. The most I could give it critically, if I were reviewing it would be 1.5 stars out of 4.

how is it rated R? how odd. I may see it in a few year or something on dvd but i'm not rushing out to see it anytime soon. i do love dumb comedies, but only when i rent a few of them (because sometimes they are TOO dumb to watch so you need a fall-back or 2) at once.

Will Ferrell movies just don't appeal to me. Looking forward to seeing The Other Boleyn Girl and Penelope.
