Mysterious green gas, dead birds, and an exploding guinea pig [1] were just a few of the weird plot points in episode three of American Horror Story: Cult [2], but the one thing that still has us the most confused is what happened to Meadow [3]. The episode ends with Harrison being hauled away by the police for maybe killing his wife, but there's no body to be found, just a whole lot of blood. Is the Etsy-loving Meadow dead? [4]

Is she staging her own disappearance to get back at her inattentive husband, Harrison? Did she leave behind her old life to become a full-time murder clown? On this show, anything is possible — especially when a character is only presumed dead.

Sure, there was plenty of blood at the Wilton's, but this is a couple that is storing an alarming amount of creepy barrels in their garage and they are part of a cult. Access to blood is probably not an issue for either of them. Add in Meadow's pinkie swear initiation into the cult of Kai, and there are plenty of hints that she could still be among the living. Then again, Harrison's initiation led to him confess he wouldn't mind if his wife turned up dead, so Meadow's life may have been sacrificed to further whatever nefarious plan Kai has in store for Ally.

There are an alarming number of theories surrounding Meadow's fate. But unlike watching American Horror Story [5], the process of sorting through them all doesn't have to be scary. Here are just a few things we think could have happened to Meadow — and, yes, we're looking forward to having them all be proven wrong in episode four.

• Meadow channeled her inner Gone Girl and staged her own death. Her initiation with Kai ends with Meadow promising to stop apologizing. She's a woman who is sick of being unappreciated by her husband and the world. And much like the Amazing Amy from Gillian Flynn's psychological novel, she craves attention. One way to ensure everyone focuses on her would be to orchestrate her own murder.
• She ran off to join Kai's cult full-time. Meadow wants a purpose, and Kai seems to be willing to give her one. She's clearly part of the plan to push Ally over the edge, and since the Jill Stein-voter threatened to kill her neighbors, she gave them the perfect opportunity to frame her for murder. In this scenario, Harrison would be in on the plot, and be tasked with working overtime to implicate Ally in his wife's death.
• Kai murdered Meadow to fulfill Harrison's dark wish. Kai is obsessed with fear and the way it drives people. During Harrison's session, Kai forces him to confess that he wants Meadow dead. If the blue-haired cult leader made that happen, then Harrison would be put in the position of owing Kai a favor.
• Ally killed Meadow during a dissociative fugue. While it's entirely possible the green gas Ally breathes in is just one more illusion meant to amplify her hysteria, there's a small chance that it's actually toxic. If it is, then Ally may be responsible for her neighbor's murder — although the show would need to explain when and how she had the chance to kill Meadow.
• Harrison murdered Meadow to fulfill his desire to be free. The beekeeper may have become obsessed with the idea of getting rid of Meadow after Kai brings his feelings to the surface. Since Ally threatens to kill both Harrison and Meadow, he could use his neighbor as the perfect scapegoat to get away with the murder.
• The cult members conspired to make it seem like Meadow disappeared in order to amp up the gaslighting of Ally. Hey, if they really want to send poor Ally over the edge, all they need to do is dress up the presumed-dead Meadow in a clown costume and send her across the street to do a bit of haunting while Ivy is conveniently taking a break from her wife.

The truth about Meadow is sure to come out soon enough. Just don't be surprised if Harrison's odd wife is alive and part of a much bigger conspiracy to bring down Ally than anyone could imagine.
