23 Movies to Watch on Your Snow Day
If you live somewhere that's getting hit with snow this time of year, we've got some sound advice. Of course, you're welcome to curl up with a good book so you can dig into our reading challenge, but maybe you want something to watch. We recommend you bundle up with one of these films about characters who feel your frigid pain. Whether you're into period pieces, thrillers, comedy, or romance, one of our suggestions will be your cup of tea, we promise. Speaking of, maybe make yourself a cup of nice, warm tea before diving into your snowy movie marathon.
Snow Day
Obvious choice. If you haven't seen this Nickelodeon-produced movie from 2000, now is the time.
Dumb and Dumber
Harry (Jeff Daniels) and Lloyd (Jim Carrey) are basically a study on what not to do in the cold weather. Lesson No. 1: Travel in something warmer than a scooter. No. 2: Never, ever lick anything frozen.
Inception
In Inception, architect Ariadne (Ellen Page) designs a snowy landscape as one of the deeper levels of the subconscious. It's the perfect spot for a chase scene on skis.
Edward Scissorhands
OK, so it's not snow per se, but Edward (Johnny Depp)'s ice sculpture shavings definitely provide the right effect. Even years later as an older woman, Kim (Winona Ryder) still believes he's up in his house, making it come down.
Fargo
Snow is so white and pristine — well, unless you live in Fargo, in which case it's most likely splattered with blood. The killers in the small town prefer to keep their victims on ice. (Get it?)
Groundhog Day
If you're going to relive a day over and over, you'd hope that it would at least be warm. Phil (Bill Murray) has to brave the elements more than once, but the most ironic part is that he's a weatherman.
The Day After Tomorrow
When global warming spawns a new ice age, Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal) is forced to hide out in the New York Public Library until things warm back up. Handy tip: if you're in a pinch for firewood, old books can always do the trick.
The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe
Narnia's beautiful, snowy landscape in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is actually the product of a wicked spell cast by the White Witch. As a result, it's "always Winter but never Christmas."
The Shining
If you're snowed in this Winter, consider this a warning: do not end up like our pal Jack. After he takes a job at a haunted hotel, a snowstorm comes in, and Jack is left with a seriously bad case of cabin fever.
Happy Feet
Next up in the Winter Olympics: tap-dancing? In this cute animated flick set in the Antarctic, a young penguin shows off his moves by hoofing it on the ice.
Hot Tub Time Machine
Get your '80s on with this raunchy comedy about a group of friends who go on a skiing trip and thanks to a magic hot tub, are transported back to the resort's retro heyday.
Serendipity
There's nothing quite like New York in the Winter (when it's not literally too cold to snow) and Serendipity is ridiculously sweet. Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack meet at a department store, share one wonderful date, then try to find one another years later.
Little Women
See young Winona Ryder, Kirsten Dunst, Claire Danes, and Christian Bale in the charmingly snowy tale about sisters growing up during the Civil War.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
Not only does Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) have to defeat seven evil exes, he has to do it in the cold, Canadian snow. Just be glad you don't have to fight Chris Evans today.
Planes, Train, and Automobiles
Strangers John Candy and Steve Martin team up in a classic comedy to get home in time for Thanksgiving.
Misery
Think you're better off inside? Not if you're trapped with Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates) and you just killed off her favorite fictional character. If you're into Bates on American Horror Story, check out Misery to see her evil roots.
Frozen
Frozen is the ultimate snowy day movie. Toss on this Disney classic, don your tiara (you have one, right?) and sing along with the tunes.
Mystery, Alaska
Russell Crowe, Hank Azaria, and Burt Reynolds star in this underrated comedy about an Alaskan hockey town whose local players get the chance to play against the New York Rangers.
Hanna
Saoirse Ronan plays Hanna, one tough 16-year-old. Raised by her father in snowy isolation, she's become the perfect assassin and when her father leaves, her skills are put the the test.
Cool Runnings
Have you still not seen Cool Runnings? Now is the perfect time to brush up on your new favorite Jamaican bobsled team.
The Grey
Here's something we've learned about Liam Neeson in the recent years: don't mess with him. Neeson followed up his kick-ass thriller Taken with action films like The A-Team, The Next Three Days, Unknown, and the best of the bunch, a snow-packed survival story called The Grey.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Joel (Jim Carrey) and Clementine (Kate Winslet) are star-crossed lovers who find another once again after they each have their memories wiped of their relationship. The pair live in chilly Montauk, NY, and there are some particularly memorable icy scenes.
